LAW REVIEW SYMPOSIUM DRAWS NATIONAL ATTENTION
FTC Chair Lina Khan gave the keynote address at the 2022 Law Review Symposium, engaging in a dialog with Prof. Mark Glick of the Department of Economics.
On October 21, the Lee E. Teitelbaum Utah Law Review Symposium was held at the College of Law. Titled “The New Roaring Twenties: The Progressive Agenda For Antitrust And Consumer Protection Law”, the event attracted high-ranking government officials, nationally-respected academics and prominent practitioners. A panel moderated by Prof. Contreras focused on the intersection of IP and antitrust law, while Prof. Christopher Peterson led a discussion of consumer protection in the progressive antitrust era. The Symposium was covered by a range of national media outlets including NPR, Bloomberg, Politico and M-Lex.
UTAH RANKS #70 AMONG WORLDWIDE INSTITUTIONS FOR PATENT INFLUENCE
The University of Utah was recently ranked #70 among all academic and research institutions in the world in terms of the influence of its patent portfolio. It is the only Utah-based institution to appear on the list of the top 500 institutions compiled by Nature.
PROFESSOR CONTRERAS RECEIVES JENSEN CHAIR

Professor Contreras was recently named the James T. Jensen Professor of Law. The Jensen Chair was created to honor James T. Jensen (1943-2013), a prominent Utah businessman, developer and philanthropist who graduated from the College of Law in 1967. The Chair is awarded to a faculty member who has demonstrated “a significant history of assisting others to gain knowledge and experience in transactional law.”

IP SCHOLARS PUBLISH IN LEADING SCIENTIFIC JOURNALS
Utah IP Scholars have recently published in some of the world’s leading scientific journals
College of Law IP scholars have been actively publishing not only in law reviews, but in the scientific literature as well. In January, Professor Contreras and Victoria Carrington (3L), together with David Cyranoski from Kyoto University, published an article exploring the patent landscape of assisted reproductive technologies such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) and in vitro gametogenesis (IVG) in Nature Biotechnology. And in December, Prof. Contreras was the senior author of a paper in Science that was produced by an international coalition of 18 academics organized by American University. The article argues for international copyright reform to support text and data mining research.
A PATENT SMALL CLAIMS COURT?
Professors Jonas Anderson and Contreras have been participating in a consultative group advising the Administrative Conference of the United States (ACUS) as it considers the creation of a “small claims court” for patent disputes. The group has met twice via zoom, and a report is expected in the coming months.
IP COURSE OFFERINGS 2023-24
Though the Spring semester has just gotten going, it’s time to start to think about classes for the 2023-24 academic year. The College of Law will be offering a wide range of IP classes, from the core Patent, Copyright and Trademark courses, to the annual IP Moot Court and Patent Drafting competitions, to advanced offerings such as IP Transactions, a seminar on IP Antitrust and Competition, a new bootcamp on Pharmaceutical Patenting, and a new course titled Music Law. In addition, several new IP-related classes available for law students will be cross-listed from the Department of Economics. Watch for all of these in the upcoming course catalog and class listings.

In Fall 2023, Professor Contreras will again offer IP Transactions using his open access casebook Intellectual Property Licensing and Transactions: Theory and Practice (2022) (shown at left).
