Meet Board Member Jamie Young

Hello, everyone! My name is Jamie Young. I have worked for West Valley City for 25 years and am currently the Parks and Recreation Director. Our Parks & Recreation Department oversees more than 40 parks, two golf courses (The Ridge and Stonebridge Golf Clubs), the Family Fitness Center, Centennial Outdoor Pool and Harman Senior Recreation Center. I am lucky to work for a great City with people who are smart, creative and committed.

I love spending time with my family. Our two kids, daughter age 13 and son age 11, keep my husband and me busy with their sports and activities as well as camping, swimming and visiting theme parks as often as possible.

As a working mother, I've had access to services which allowed me to work and know my kids were safe, including having my children in the childcare, pre-school and summer kamp at the Family Fitness Center and have always felt supported by the City and my supervisors as a working parent.

I appreciate Utah Women Leading Government for the support, training and networking opportunities it provides for women to enhance their skills to lead in the highest government jobs across the state.

A Bolder Way Forward City Designation

We’re excited to share that there is now an official A Bolder Way Forward Local Government Committee dedicated to engaging towns, cities, and counties across Utah in the vital work of helping women, girls, and families thrive.

Already, North Salt Lake and Midvale City have taken the lead by passing official resolutions to become "A Bolder Way Forward Cities." These communities are setting a powerful example of what local leadership can look like in supporting women, girls, and families.

But this is just the beginning—the committee is hopeful that many more municipalities will join this important movement!

If you believe your city might be interested in becoming part of this transformative effort, please reach out to Mariah Hill at mhill@midvaleut.gov.

What We're Reading

"Mindset: The New Psychology of Success" by Carol S. Dweck

This book explores the profound impact of our mindset on our success and happiness by introducing two core concepts: the fixed mindset and the growth mindset. A fixed mindset is the belief that our talents, intelligence, and abilities are static traits. This can lead to a fear of failure, a tendency to avoid challenges, and a feeling that effort is fruitless. In this state, a person is focused on proving their worth rather than on improving it.

In contrast, a growth mindset is the belief that our abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work. People with a growth mindset embrace challenges as opportunities to learn, persevere in the face of setbacks, and see effort as the path to mastery. Dweck provides compelling examples from business, sports, and education to show how adopting a growth mindset can unlock potential and lead to greater achievement and resilience in all aspects of life.
