Celebrate Black History in Virginia with special events, guided tours, live musical and dramatic performances, lectures and films.
The National Museum of African American History and Culture's 2025 Black History Month website and toolkit feature resources for learning about Black history all year round. They are also hosting New York Times best-selling author and founder of The Nap Ministry, Tricia Hersey, for an interactive Historically Speaking: Tricia Hersey—We Will Rest! program streaming online for free on February 18. The program features Hersey’s readings from her new book, “We Will Rest! The Art of Escape,” accompanied by meditations, poetry and music.
PBS and PBS KIDS announced their Black History Month programming that explores Black heritage, cultural icons, family bonds, and more, bringing forth inspiring content that honors the richness of the community.
This year's Black History Month theme, “African Americans and Labor,” intends to encourage broad reflections on intersections between Black people’s work and their workplaces in all their iterations and key moments, themes, and events in Black history and culture across time and space and throughout the US, Africa, and the Diaspora. Like religion, social justice movements, and education, studying African Americans’ labor and labor struggles are important organizing foci for new interpretations and reinterpretations of the Black past, present, and future. Read more about the theme and download a printable PDF from the ASALH website.

A sign-up form is available for Spanish-speakers, and interpreters are available for those who speak languages other than English or Spanish. Email crodig1@vt.edu for more information.

How to Design Your Life Around Collective Care
Collective care has always been a survival strategy. Writers Rushdia Mehreen and David Gray-Donald credit queer, disabled, and Black feminist organizations for introducing the concept into our cultural lexicon, describing it as: “seeing members’ well-being – particularly their emotional health – as a shared responsibility of the group rather than the lone task of an individual. It means that a group commits to addressing interlocking oppressions and reasons for deteriorating well-being within the group while also combatting oppression in society at large. It places an emphasis on joint accountability, with the aim of collective empowerment.” Read more about how to care for community through crisis on Them.

There are times when life seems to toss one stone after another onto our path. In those moments, it’s helpful to take inspiration from the flowing waters of the Madison River in Yellowstone National Park. Sitting by the river’s side, Dora takes us through a guided mindfulness exercise, reminding us that the nature of water — calm and still beneath the churning surface — allows it to glide effortlessly past all obstacles. | | | | |
