TO THE POINTE - February 2017
Cecchetti Awards Celebration
Congratulations to the Cecchetti Classical Ballet Award winners from VAB:

On January 29th, 11 students from VAB traveled to Vancouver for the annual Cecchetti Awards. Cecchetti Awards presentations are selected by audition in the fall. Each student is sent a dvd of a dance to learn, as well as a bodysuit to wear so that everyone looks the same (no costuming). Marks are scored on their workshop as well as their dance.

- Abigail: Junior 1 winner
- Hazuki: Junior 2 winner (honourable mention: Anna, Layanna)
- Anri: Senior winner (honourable mention: Sayaka)

Congratulations also to two Pas de Deux couples Luke and Saia and Adrian and Airi, who were invited to perform during the show.

If I weren't a dance professional:
I've tried it... It's not an option! There's something about growing up dancing - it always stays with you. The ballet studio feels like home, so it was natural for me to move into arts administration.

Why I work in dance: I fell in love with Arts Marketing and Administration under the mentorship of Stephen White (Executive Producer of Dance Victoria). He taught me that if you have the background knowledge, the passion and the drive, you can make this career work for you. There are so many incredible artists, professionals and students in this industry (and this city!) and I am lucky to work among them.

Best advice for up and coming dance professionals:
Think about work on the other side of the curtain. I trained seriously until high school and then gave it all up - my body and life circumstances not being right for a career on the stage.
After University, it took me a few years of aimless work and some soul searching to figure out that I needed to come back to dance. There is a whole other world of producers, presenters, choreographers, stage managers, lighting and costume designers, administrators (the list goes on).... that make the dance industry happen. Consider it as a possibility for when your time on the stage ends - whenever that may be.
Dancers for hire.

Do you have a small business? Are you looking for part-time help?

We have a couple of international students of working age, who have study permits allowing them to work.

Please contact the office if you know of any opportunities that would suit the dance schedule (Saturday evenings, Sundays, etc).

rooted in a deep commitment to helping people manage the legal issues of their
personal affairs. I regard it as a privilege to be a part of my clients' lives, and I love my
work of providing legal services that help people create security and stability through all
the changes and challenges of their lives.

My practice focuses on real estate, wills, estate administration, and life planning in the

related to adult guardianship, is an important developing area of law that I have a keen
interest in helping people navigate. I also practice family law, employment law and
corporate/commercial law.

My personal passions are my wonderful teenage daughter (who is in the Victoria

also often comes to work with me), and camping in my '76 Westfalia with my kayak up

VAB is heading to Vancouver to audition prospective students. Know any Senior level Ballet students looking for a post-secondary program?
