Congratulations to VACAP member Open Door Community on New Housing in Wytheville!

The name “Monroe North Apartments” is about to become very familiar to the town of Wytheville as ground broke Wednesday on the construction of new homes in the community.

“This project took an act of congress to make it happen, and it literally did,” said Jordan Stidham, executive director of Open Door Community, the nonprofit behind the Monroe North Apartments. He was referring to the congressionally directed funding provided by Senator Warner and Kaine. He also thanked Virginia Housing, DHCD, VCDC and the Mount Rogers Community Services Board for their funding and partnership.

New affordable housing coming to Wythe County was made possible by Open Door Community’s innovative approach, local support and federal and state funding support.

Virginia Mercury: Housing bills to boost supply, protect tenants on way to Spanberger's desk

While some of the most progressive housing bills did not survive this year’s legislative session, many housing proposals are on their way to Gov. Abigail Spanberger’s desk — some of which she has already stated she will sign into law. The bills represented a flurry of efforts to address housing issues including affordability, supply, renter protections, and state input on local zoning decisions. Although every idea didn’t make it across the finish line, the 2026 legislative session marked significant strides in housing policy at the state level.

Virginia Mercury: The 10 most important things that happened in Virginia's 2026 legislative session

Virginia lawmakers wrapped up the 2026 General Assembly session in dramatic fashion, adjourning their regular session without a budget deal after an unexpected dispute over data center tax breaks fractured negotiations. See below for full article from the Virginia Mercury.

April is Global Volunteer Month

Your agency's volunteers are worth their weight in gold, and April is Global Volunteer Month. What a perfect time to let all of your volunteers know how important they are to your mission. Does your community know how valuable your volunteers are? Have you calculated the value of volunteer time? If that calculation isn't part of your data reporting to the broader community, it should be.

Are you doing anything special for your volunteers?

Share your efforts with VACAP (send pictures!) at info@vacap.org.
