Applications Now Open for VAM Fellowship
Our Leadership and Advocacy Fellowship sponsored by
Langley Federal Credit Union is open to mid-career museum professionals who are members in good standing of VAM. The goal of the fellowship is to produce original research that can inform the larger VAM community about issues facing the field. If you are interested in applying to be one of this year’s fellows, the online application is open. The deadline to apply is September 30. Each selected fellow receives $1,000 honorarium to help them with their work through the year.

for a special full-day workshop on Monday, September 23 in Fredericksburg to learn about Wikipedia and how to edit and improve Wikipedia articles and engage with museum-focused Wikipedia projects such as GLAM-Wiki, an initiative that helps cultural institutions share their resources with the world through collaborative projects with experienced Wikipedia editors. The City of Manassas has acquired a new historic property. Annaburg Manor, the former home of Robert Portner, an Alexandria businessman and owner of Portner Brewing, was recently purchased from NOVANT Health Services. Built in 1872 as a summer residence for the Portners, it is believed this was the first air conditioned private residence in the United States. The home and surrounding grounds will be added to the Manassas Museum System inventory, bringing to seven the number of historic properties managed by the museum.
Detective Work: Solving the Mysteries of Civil War Graffiti
On November 2, The
Northern Virginia Civil War Graffiti Trail will host
“Beneath the Paint: Civil War Graffiti Symposium” at
Historic Blenheim and the
Civil War Interpretive Center to examine the history of Civil War graffiti. This day of talks will examine the history of Civil War graffiti and the stories that unfold from the soldiers' enduring writings.

The Virginia Humanities currently has two grants that are open for applications. The
Open Grant program is available from April 15-October 15, 2019.
Open to proposals on a wide range of subjects, for projects in any format, and for amounts typically up to $10,000. The second grant opportunity is the
Discretionary Grant

The
Institute of Museum and Library Sciences is offering grant opportunities for their Museum Assessment Program(MAP)
MAP is designed to help museums assess their strengths and weaknesses, and plan for the future. Applications are due December 1, 2019
The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS)
is rolling out a new series of
regional grant workshops
designed for applicants for the museum grant programs. Providing greater access to IMLS funds and resources is one of the agency’s core strategic goals, and these regional workshops are a proactive step towards realizing this goal. These free workshops are intended for new and returning applicants.
The Mid Atlantic regional workshop is in Newark, NJ on September 24.
IMLS
has six opportunities in the coming months to apply for grants from the nation’s primary source of federal museum funding. IMLS is now accepting applications for six grant programs:

is looking for Virginia museum news and upcoming exhibit announcements as part of its larger November-December feature on the importance and history of museums.
- News could include recent additions to permanent exhibits, expansions, etc.
- Exhibit announcements could include new permanent or temporary exhibits that are open to visitors anytime from November 2019 through March 2020.

Virginia Department of Education is hosting Deeper Learning conferences around the state in September and October, in Charlottesville, Chesapeake, Dulles and Roanoke. A New Definition of “Museum” Sparks International Debate
The International Council of Museums will vote on a new definition of museums in September. The proposed change includes language about “social justice, global equality and planetary wellbeing.” Critics say the text is too political for most museums to employ. Read about it
