Message from the President

I hope everyone is enjoying all that springtime has had to offer, and with summer just around the corner, I hope it will be an enjoyable season for you as well.

VAPDC has stayed busy at work since my previous message. The Executive Directors Committee and Board of Directors both have held meetings. The Executive Directors have been keeping close tabs on funding issues at the federal level and also are having ongoing discussions about the state requirement for regional water supply planning, which many of our PDCs have decided to lead. After closing out the three-session virtual Winter Series with a great discussion on changing demographics in Virginia, we have turned our attention to the Summer Series and even the next in-person staff training workshop to be held in the fall. Thanks to the Program Committee for a great start planning these events! We’re looking to have an in-person gathering of the Board and Executive Directors in early August, at which time we’ll hold the annual VAPDC business meeting. We’ve also had our PDCs participating in regional meetings of the Virginia Association of Counties and appreciate the opportunity to interact with our county officials. As I said, we’ve been busy!

It is great to see the good works that continue to happen in our PDC regions. The collaboration with member local governments and other local and regional partners is so critical to the success of these communities. Keep it up! Have a great rest of spring and summer!

VAPDC Summer Series: Training opportunities for PDC staff will get underway next month. These virtual events are being scheduled for the third Monday in the months of June, August, and September (June 16, August 18, and September 15). We anticipate having sessions on working with local governments; data dashboards; and workforce issues in Virginia. Details are still taking shape but be on the lookout soon for additional session information and registration.

NADO “Day on the Hill”: A good contingent of PDC Commissioners and Executive Directors travelled to Washington in mid-March to attend the 2025 National Association of Development Organization’s Washington Conference. Due to conflicting schedules, we were not able to meet with Virginia’s two U.S. Senators, but several Executive Directors and PDC Commissioners spent time with Congressman Morgan Griffith for some good discussion about regional work and projects.

VAPDC Releases Sponsorship Opportunities: VAPDC is thankful for the partnerships that we have with state agencies and public/private entities. We are pleased to report that our shift in program offerings this past year to focus on training opportunities for local and regional officials, and for PDC staff, was a resounding success. As we are looking to continue and enhance those offerings in the next fiscal year, we want to express our appreciation for the ongoing work with and financial support of VAPDC by our partners. Last month, the Board of Directors, as it does every year, approved a sponsorship opportunities form for the upcoming fiscal year. The FY25/26 form is available here, and we hope that you will consider supporting VAPDC financially in the coming year. Thank you!

About VAPDC

The Virginia Association of Planning District Commissions (VAPDC) is an organization comprised of the 21 Planning District Commissions/Regional Councils in Virginia. The PDCs joined together to create the VAPDC to share best practices and further regionalism across the State. VAPDC works to bring diverse resources together at the regional level in partnership with local, state, and federal entities to strengthen regions and the Commonwealth.

The purpose of the Association is to promote coordination and cooperation among the Commonwealth's Planning District Commissions/Regional Councils to heighten their effectiveness and efficiency; provide mutual assistance and the exchange of ideas; and otherwise promote understanding for how PDCs/RCs can help save their regions and the Commonwealth time and money.
