Casper Brindle, “Light Glyph VF,” 2022, pigmented acrylic, 44 x 74 x 8” |
“Transcendent Matter” brings together Los Angeles-based artists Casper Brindle and Alex Weinstein. The two, life-long surfers and close friends, present a shared reverence for the sublimity of landscape with their seductive output. The exhibition features new, wall-based sculptural work made of mass-cast resin and vacuum-formed plexiglass. Both artists’ use of non-conventional materials highlight a shared interest in expanding the vocabulary of art process while riffing on well-established movements of the recent past. Each artist’s work has an ebullience of its own but their processes are quite different. Brindle’s acclaimed Light Glyph series employs industrial production techniques and his immaculate sculptures flirt with reductive austerity while joyously juxtaposing effusive color. By comparison, Weinstein’s Ocean State sculptures are decidedly tactile, sensual objects created start-to-finish by hand. Exploring the heft, hue and rhythm of the sea, these quieter works have a personality bordering on portraiture. The show’s focus on materiality commingles references to Minimalism, Light and Space and Finish Fetish art production of the 1970’s LA scene while expressing a renewed enthusiasm for subject, bordering on romantic, which in turn gifts the exhibition with a vibrant contemporary pulse. | |

Alex Weinstein, “Ocean State 8,” 2022,
polyester resin, fiberglass, oil paint, 40” diameter
| |
|
Transformative and mysterious, Casper Brindle’s newest series, the “Light Glyphs,” continues his investigation into the expressive possibilities of color and form while utilizing new materials and modes of production. A most ancient form of communication, a glyph is a symbol or mark carved in relief to convey ideas without words. These enigmatic pieces tend more toward sculptural object than painting, each a single sheet of shimmering metallic color encased in a transparent shell, punctuated only by a radiant central form. A glowing push and pull ensues as the viewer circles the piece, the object before them shifting before their eyes. The slim bar of neon color that cuts through the picture plane invites a quiet reverence, as form seems to materialize from the abyss, in an act of technicolor alchemy. The rigidity of the hard-edge shapes and boundaries of the picture plane is softened by the use of un-expected and sensuous color. The tension in these works presents the viewer with a series of intriguing dualities; they seem to float in the space between reality and illusion, the finite and the infinite. The repetition of form and brilliant swathes of color create a visual language that becomes a meditation on experience and perception.
Alex Weinstein writes about his “Ocean State” sculptures, "I come from Rhode Island, the Ocean State, and titled this series for my old home. Of course the title works as a double entendre for an emotional and/or physical state too and that association is vital to the project. The work itself is made from surfboard manufacturing materials: resin and fiberglass and is part of a larger body of work I started in 2003 called swell models. Using those materials has always felt authentic to me (a lifelong surfer) and a continuing chat with the LA artist forbears I have come to know so well. I use oil paint to tint my sculptural work and everything is made by hand. The shapes are based on feel and experience, not 3D scanners and C&C machines. The color comes from the landscape via my paint tray. To me, the magic of the Western skyline, dusted with jet fuel and the surging Pacific below it, present a type of chemical optimism. That pulse is the heartbeat of my work."

Suchitra Mattai, "In the absence of power, In the presence of love" presents new mixed-media paintings, tapestries, and a soft-sculpture installation that evoke the artist!s Indo-Caribbean heritage. Mattai’s work engages with the subject and form of European pastoral landscapes and figuration as well as Indian miniature paintings. Linking craft-based processes, sumptuous weavings and traditional techniques, the artist portrays resolute brown heroines, replacing heroes and colonizers and reclaiming a patriarchal past.
Mattai describes her process as one of “brown reclamation,” reworking original images to tell new stories. Embroidery, needlepoint, beading and found objects insert women’s handiwork into the traditional painterly landscapes. In other works, the heroic stories, figures, animals, patterns, and landscapes of Indian miniature paintings are reconfigured. Here, the heroes are replaced by heroines—empowered and mythic, yet empathetic and accessible. They are peaceful warriors and include both the young and the old. In future perfect (2023), a woman quietly reads of the future surrounded by floral needlepoints and a black beaded halo, combining myth, memory, and folktales.

“Sam Francis: Distilled"
Through July 29, 2023
|
|
Seldom does an exhibition so succinctly offer new insights on a major artist who we might think we know. No long manifestos. No overarching declarations. Distilled to essentials, this exhibition offers expansive meditative possibilities.
A BIT OF HISTORY
The first exhibition of Sam Francis' career took place in Paris in 1952. All works were monochromatic. His first museum exhibition took place in 1959 at the Pasadena Museum of Art (now the Norton Simon Museum) in Pasadena.
AND NOW
In Pasadena, Jack Rutberg Fine Arts Revisits Both Histories.
“Sam Francis — Distilled” exclusively focuses upon a hugely important aspect of Francis’ rarely seen monochromatic graphic works. It compliments the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s present Sam Francis exhibition which runs through July 16, keying upon Francis’ profound intercultural dialogue between Western and Eastern aesthetics.

Bring a photo and commission TEACHR to paint your dog. From 6PM-9PM, there will be an opening reception for artist Martin Bruinsma’s brand new exhibition Dignity of Silence.
Martin Bruinsma begins by observing and photographing various locations at night, searching for scenes with vacant space and dramatic contrast. There is a kind of peace Bruinsma finds in the stillness and silence of these places, painting them to “preserve a moment in time as it is, and as it will be.” Bruinsma’s signature style draws inspiration from classic film noir. He applies this vision to contemporary settings. Working with both acrylic and oil, Bruinsma layers thin washes of paint and allows light to come through specific areas of the canvas.

"The Metamorphosis of the Ascending Feminine"
Curated by Mela M
July 15 - 29, 2023
Opening Reception:
Saturday, July 15, 4-7pm
|
|
The works presented in this exhibit by Zära Monet and Megan Jaster offer the observer a rare opportunity to experience subtle changes in perception. The apperception of these oil paintings escapes the filters of traditional analytical and linear systems, allowing more direct access to the deeper structures of feeling wherein reside the non-linearity and non-locality of the intuitive feminine dimension. Monet references her use of “obscured perspectives and subtle shifts of color saturation and temperature “to make viewing her work more “nuanced and introspective”. She promotes her work as challenging “the generic way a painting is received” by skewing the locus of composition or reversing light logic often in an old master style and as wanting her paintings to “reify a psychological and reflexive viewing experience that ultimately transcends the viewer into an unknown consciousness”.
In Jaster’s work, she uses light and color to permeate her paintings with a quality or feeling of “otherworldliness and a reverence for the spiritual”. In her works, she creates unorthodox dreamlike vignettes and biomorphic forms through traditional and innovative painting techniques inspired by a lifelong influence and exploration of the connection between nature and humanity. Both artists are committed to guiding and captivating as well as challenging and, ultimately, inspiring the viewer’s imagination to explore, perhaps even embrace, their own metamorphosis and ascension to heretofore unknown higher planes of consciousness.

He was one of the first Caucasian artists to visit New Mexico, arriving in Santa Fe in 1883.
