VAST 2017/2018 Speaker Series:
Kim Collins, "Negative Space"

Kim Collins is a Fort Worth, TX abstract artist whose work is heavily influenced by the tangled forms, interwoven patterns and layers of shapes found in nature.  She has exhibited in numerous galleries in the North TX area and has won several awards.  Her work is in collections across the US and also in Europe.

Kim Collins' statement: "My work has evolved over the years from realistic watercolors to abstract designs in acrylic and mixed media.  The likely catalyst for this change was a bout with cancer which brought about many "rethinking what's important" moments.  I realized I had been working with processes which were rigid, traditional and a bit tedious for me, but I was afraid to break out of my box.  After the cancer scare, I allowed myself the freedom to have fun, try new things, get out of my comfort zone and play with design, color and materials.  I have never looked back."

"I usually start a piece with no pre-conceived idea of what it will ultimately become, but a sort of "relational connection" develops as the work progresses.  Sometimes the relationship is easy and harmonious; sometimes it is full of conflict which must be resolved...just like life.  Rather than depict a literal image, I hope to convey the feeling, energy and essence of the organic forms which inspire me."

"Off the Shelves"  exhibition at Emily Fowler Central Library
Mary Simon will have her work on exhibit through  Thanksgiving.

Mary Simon enjoys working in a variety of mediums, making each painting fresh and exciting as she changes styles and textures. Inspired by her surroundings, she primarily works from her own photographs, from the different parts of the world that she and her family have lived and traveled.

Simon's installation of works is largely architectural, in her signature monochromatic watercolor style. Her pieces at the Senior Center reflect her love for bright colors and the movement and flow of the different mediums.

Other local art of hers can be seen throughout the offices of Drs. Payne and Boatner in Keller, TX, Parkside Animal Hospital, also in Keller, and the Department of Public Safety Museum in Austin, TX. Simon has exhibited in Japan and Greece and is looking forward to more local exhibitions in this new phase of her life as a full time artist back in North Texas.

Work by Deanna Wood

Deanna Wood writes in her artist statement:
We leave our mark on places, but I believe they also leave marks on us. This series explores that idea - how these places shape us, how we remember meaningful places, and how our memories of such places change over time.  Scraps of wallpaper and maps, images of houses and the fading silhouettes of possible residents explore domesticity and memory.

Perri Hamilton's statement:
"Through the medium of watercolor, my art reflects my interest in the ever-changing, growing, blooming and decaying nature found in the North Texas region. The patterns, textures, and the variations in light of the intimate views of my garden, local parks, empty lots, and my neighbor's yards fascinate me, particularly the metamorphoses from season to season."
