Visual Arts Society of Texas News

News and Events
    December 2013

The December meeting had been postponed because of the weather and will take place on Thursday, December 12 at 7pm, same location.

Please note that next month's VAST meeting is January 9, the second Thursday of the month. It will be held after VAST's Annual Soup and Salad Evening, which will be served at 5:30pm.

From our President, Jo Williams

I continue to be in awe of all our VAST members. What a diverse and talented group we have! And, what a generous group of folks!  Our organization would not exist without each of you who contribute and have contributed over the years with your time, skills, and money.  Words cannot express how much I truly appreciate each of you.

I would like to remind you as you consider your end of year giving that VAST can always use financial contributions. Your donations can be designated for a specific use, or we can use them in our general operating funds.

We are accepting contributions now for awards for our 125-Mile Exhibit which opens January 17. We will be giving a $500 Best of Show and six $200 Best of Category awards. We will also accept $100 donations for Honorable Mention Awards. All contributions will be recognized by giving the award your name unless you designate otherwise. You will also be credited as a Sponsor in the catalog.  The deadline for awards to the 125-Mile Exhibit is December 20.

If you prefer to make a Purchase Award, they always make an artist happy. Please notify us of your intent by December 20. You can select a piece of art to purchase by coming to the Center for Visual Arts on January 7. A Purchase Award check is written by the donor, payable to the selected artist; Purchase Awards are announced at the reception.  These awards are also featured in the catalog with the cash awards.

Please notify our Awards Coordinator, Ingrid Scobie, at [email protected] or by calling 940.453.5507 if you would like to make an award. Mail your check to VAST, PO Box 1281, Denton, TX, and memo your check so we will know your wishes for your contributions.

Another opportunity for giving is to make a contribution to our Merging Visions exhibition. We will acknowledge all sponsors in our Collections IV catalog.

I wish everyone a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and life's richest blessings for the coming year!

Jo Williams

Guest Artist This Month

VAST Member, Deanna Wood

At December's meeting, Deanna Wood will be demonstrating techniques in encaustic, a medium that was used as early as the fifth century B.C., by ancient Greek artists. Encaustic is a mixture melted together, of beeswax, a natural damar resin and a pigment. The molten paint is then brushed on a surface and "fused" using a heat gun or torch.

Born in Houston in 1966, Deanna Wood spent most of her childhood moving around the country with her family, returning to Texas in 1982. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master of Arts in graphic design from Texas Woman's University. Wood worked as a graphic designer in a corporate environment for 14 years. After leaving the corporate world, she decided to pursue a career in fine art, receiving a Master of Fine Arts in painting from Texas Woman's University in December of 2004. She lives in Denton, Texas, where she teaches classes at Texas Woman's University and at The Encaustic Center in Richardson, Texas.

The paintings shown here are from Wood's Personal Spaces Series. The artist had the following statement reference this series.

"We leave our mark on places, but I believe they also leave marks on us. This series explores that idea - how these places shape us, how we remember meaningful places, and how our memories of such places change over time."
Fort Walton Beach 1

"My family moved a lot during my childhood.
Images of houses, scraps of wallpaper, glimpses of maps, and shadows of the homes' residents all represent fragmented memories of personal space."
Newport News 2, 12" x 12", machine stitching, collage, and encaustic

"I was drawn to encaustic because of the tactile quality and the endless possibilities to explore transparency and opacity."

Sorolla and America

December 13, 2013 - April 19, 2014

During a single month in 1909, more than 150,000 people flocked to see the portraits, genre scenes, and sun-filled beachscapes of Joaqun Sorolla y Bastida (1863-1923); he was the most popular Spanish artist in the world until the arrival of Pablo Picasso. Sorolla and America brings together approximately 160 works of art that will explore for the first time this artist's unique relationship with early 20th-century America, examining his immense popularity, as well as his associations with contemporaries such as John Singer Sargent and William Merritt Chase.
