Our speaker this month is Justine Wollaston.

Justine Wollaston creates custom paintings, sculpture and video, using various media including

pencils, paint, wire, cement, paper, the computer, and video.

She lives in Pilot Point, Texas and can often be found in Lowbrows on the historic square in Pilot Point, with her 5 year old Great Dane, Isabelle.

Justine Wollaston's Artist Statement:
"I believe art has the capacity to inspire us, stimulate our minds and our hearts, and connect us to our humanity. When I create a portrait of a beloved individual I strive to capture the character of the subject. When I indulge my own ideas, I create art that seeks to understand who I am, questions ideas and fantasizes a different paradigm, and expresses the pure happiness and awe I have in my own existence. I feel public art should relate to the community, and stretch the perceptions and imaginations of the individuals who live there. Art is the universal language. It has always been and will always be the element essential to our ability to express ourselves and understand each other."

Alternative Venues and Avenues for Marketing Your Art
Mill, stained glass

Is your art suited for illustration purposes? Can you see your pieces in a commercial venue such as a law firm? Is the subject matter or emotional appeal of your work compatible with a health center or peaceful medical setting?

It is a good idea to occasionally re-evaluate where and how you are marketing your art.  It may be that you can pursue different methods to focus on getting your work to a different audience.  Sometimes an opportunity presents itself in unusual ways.

Party Tree, stained glass
VAST member and stained glass artist, Christie A. Wood, traveled to Los Angeles, CA on Feb. 22nd and participated in a special art show that was organized to lead up to the Oscar's. "An Unexpected Art Show" was sponsored by TheOneRing.net, an online website covering JRR Tolkien events and information, (The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit books/movies.)

Christie A. Wood is definitely a fan of the Tolkien movies, and ran into one of the owners of this website at a private costume party for the Red Carpet Tour's The Hobbit world movie premiere in Wellington in December, 2012.  The owner had met Wood before and had followed her work on her website and facebook pages.  Wood was asked to come up with original stained glass artwork based on either of the movie series; she created a series of six pieces (three are shown.) These painted glass panels are depictions of the fantasy world of Hobbiton, where Bilbo and Frodo live. The Hobbit was up for four Oscar's this year, in the technical categories.

One Ring Beauty, stained glass
The whirlwind trip to the West Coast came to an end for Wood, but it resulted in the sale of three pieces and she will have the memories of the event and meeting several artists well known in this genre. Who knows how many repeat sales will be generated from taking advantage of this opportunity?

Something to think about!
