Visual Arts Society of Texas News

News and Events
         October, 2013
Our guest demonstrator for the October 3rd meeting
will be Nel Dorn Byrd.

Nel Dorn Byrd, AWS, NWS

Watercolor artist, Nel Dorn Byrd, is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, Rocky Mountain National, Western Federation, Texas Watercolor, and Southwestern Watercolor Society.   Her paintings have been juried into over 200 exhibitions throughout the US, as well as having been featured in national watercolor magazines and published in a number of books. Her paintings are in corporate and private collections throughout the United States.

Nel Dorn Byrd began drawing as a child, first painted with oils, and since 1970 has painted with the medium of watercolor.  She studied art at Midland Institute of Fine Arts, Richland College, and the University of Texas at Dallas. Byrd has studied with many watercolor instructors, traveling and painting in twelve different countries.  For twenty one years, she co-operated a successful art gallery and frame shop, Gallery VIII,  in Plano, Texas.

Her work has a personal connection to events in her life, such as travel, remembered times, and places.  She paints in a loose, impressionistic style and her works often depict strong light and dark patterns with the play of light adding excitement and interest to the subject.  Byrd feels that working in a series is often times conducive to the creative process. Nel Dorn Byrd enjoys the camaraderie with fellow artists and the sheer joy of painting.

More of Nel Dorn Bryd's work can be viewed at neldornbyrd.com.
