Laurin McCracken, Guest Artist
October 1st Watercolor Presentation
|
Laurin McCracken is an architect who has put the skills learned over the years in drawing, photographing and observing, to use as a watercolorist. McCracken explains his work,
"I interpret the real world through the medium of watercolor. While I see things as a photographer, as a painter, I am able to use the medium as a tool to express how I see things. Flowers, and in particular the Magnolia, have a strong emotional appeal to me. Perhaps, that comes from growing up in the Deep South. One of my goals is to help people see everyday things in a new light." "
My paintings of magnolias are full of drama and prove, once again, that white is not just white." McCracken has been influenced by the
Dutch and Flemish still life painters of the 16th and 17th Century.
Laurin McCracken will give a presentation about how his style of realism developed and provide a step-by-step presentation about the processes involved in the creation of one of his paintings entitled
A Still Life with Pewter Objects. He will share techniques and tips based on his workshop experience.
Born in Meridian, Mississippi, Laurin McCracken attended Auburn University and holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Architecture from Rice University and a Masters in Architecture and Urban Planning from Princeton University.
He is also an award-winning artist whose paintings have been exhibited in juried shows around the world including the Niagara Frontier Watercolor Society, Pittsburgh Watercolor Society and the Adirondacks National Exhibition of American Watercolors, California Watercolor Society, Southern Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society and the American Watercolor Society.
McCracken's paintings have been included in multiple shows in China; Shanghai Zhujiajiao International Watercolor Biennial Exhibition 2010 & 2012, the Beijing International Art Biennale 2010, 2012 and 2015, the Shenzhen International Watercolor Biennial 2013 and the Qingdao International Watercolour Salon, 2014.
His paintings have also been included in international watercolor juried exhibitions such as The World Watermedia Exposition, Thailand, Malaysian Watercolour International Exhibition and the Eau en Colours, "Masters of Watercolor" exhibition St. Petersburg, Russia, International Watercolour Biennial, Belgium, International Watercolor in Fabriano Exhibition in Fabriano, Italy.
Laurin McCracken is a signature member of more than a dozen watercolor societies including the American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, Transparent Watercolor Society of America, Southern Watercolor Society, Watercolor West, and Watercolor USA Honor Society. He is an Elected Member of the Allied Artists of America in their Watermedia Category.
His work has been published in many national and international magazines and books including:

Permanence/Impermanence
Open until October 17
The work in this exhibition has been organized around ideas of permanence and impermanence, with each of the selected artists challenging our expectations of what is constant and what is mutable. The artists remind us that when considering environmental change, what may appear to be temporary may in fact inadvertently become longstanding; and conversely, the ground underneath our feet, although seemingly steadfast, may be shifting.
