VAST Celebrates 40 Years!
An Invitation for Past Presidents to the VAST Meeting this Thursday, September 3
Past Presidents and families,

On behalf of the VAST Board of Directors, I would like to extend an invitation to you to join us for our regular September monthly meeting, September 3, 7:00 pm., Patterson-Appleton Center for the Visual Arts. We are celebrating 40 years that our organization has been serving artists and the greater Denton community. I will recognize you at the beginning of the meeting before our program, and then we will serve an anniversary cake during our break.  We hope that you can come. You each played a vital role in sustaining and keeping our organization vital, and we thank you!

Warm regards,
Jo Williams, VAST President

John Bramblitt, Guest Artist
to Speak at September 3rd Meeting
Echo at the Meadows

John Bramblitt will be speaking to "Inspiration in Paint" on Thursday evening for the members of VAST. He will share his method of painting as well. Huffpost Arts and Culture (Sept. 3, 2015 online) referred to Bramblitt's "trademark blend of vibrant colors, swirling brushstrokes and meaningful emotionality that stuns viewers, especially those previously unaware of his visual impairment.  Through a series of raised lines on the canvas, he can determine his spatial position at any moment. Through sense of touch he is able to determine the correct paint color, noting that "because oil paints are made from different substances they have a viscosity and texture that varies slightly from color to color." Through a vivid imagination, he is able to create works that transcend his own physical limitations and enter another realm, one in which the mind and not sight rules supreme."

Bramblitt is an artist living in Denton, Texas, but his art has been sold in over thirty countries. He has appeared internationally in print, TV and radio and has appeared on CBS Evening News with Katie Couric, ABC, NBC, FOX, Discovery Channel and BBC Radio and TV to name a few outlets. He's been featured in 'The New York Times' and 'Psychology Today' as well as designed the artwork for numerous magazine covers and even the artwork for major film productions. Bramblitt is the subject of the award winning documentary shorts "Line of Sight' and "Bramblitt." His work has received much recognition including the "Most Inspirational Video of 2008" from YouTube and three Presidential Service Awards for his innovative art workshops.

VAST Members are in for an informative and meaningful evening.

Pet Portraits, Carol Stoecker
How do you paint unconditional love?
Two time winner of "Best of Denton County",  artist Carol Stoecker set out to do just that in her newest collection of "Pet Portraits".  In search of a topic for her new collection, Carol sat on the floor looking into her cat's eyes...and then it came to her.  "The purest form of unconditional love is seen in the eyes of our pets!"  They let go of all expectations, let us be ourselves and give us life!  Carol enjoys painting her pets in full detail with an emphasis on the eyes, which capture the viewer's attention and communicate unconditional love.

Carol graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1986. She has been actively painting murals and canvases for the past 17 years.  Among her commercial clients you will find Blue Goose Cantina, Aw Shucks, The Church of Corinth and Grand Model Homes.

While her education is in medicine, Karloff had always had a passion for photography.  Most of her experience has been self-taught although she received tutoring from Denton photographer, Tom Judd.   As a current member of VAST she has shown her work at various locations in north Texas including Oxide Gallery, UNT Cora Stafford Gallery, The Chestnut Tree, City of Denton public libraries, Center for Visual Arts, Meadows Gallery, Johnny Carino's, TWU West Gallery and Patterson-Appleton Center for Visual Arts.  Terry is known for her photography of oddities, landscapes and architecture.

"Through the Ages"  exhibition at the Denton Senior Center
Paintings by Isabel Cano, Dawn Swepston and Patricia Hughen
Exhibit up through September 30

Isabel Cano's artist statement:
"Through my rose paintings, I recreate, from photographs I take, the moment at which I was captivated by their beauty. A moment that will never happen again and that I want to share with other people. While painting each rose I study their beauty, folds, creases, color changes, lights and shadows. The rose becomes my teacher and a very fulfilling relationship develops that will forever enrich my life. Through them, I hope to enrich the lives of those that appreciate their beauty."
Dawn Swepston's artist statement:
On a quest to re-brand the Old West, I use dramatic color and contrast to engage contemporary generations in thought about the challenges and conflicts of modern society and traditional Western values. I am interested in the decreased availability of natural resources, and the impact of physical, political, and psychological borders on individuals and society.

The work in this exhibition has been organized around ideas of permanence and impermanence, with each of the selected artists challenging our expectations of what is constant and what is mutable. The artists remind us that when considering environmental change, what may appear to be temporary may in fact inadvertently become longstanding; and conversely, the ground underneath our feet, although seemingly steadfast, may be shifting.

VAST Artist Day Out is a day where members may come paint at the CVA from 9:00am - 3pm, approximately two mornings a month.  There is no instructor, it is not a workshop...just an art gathering.

You may paint, sketch, quilt or what ever creative endeavor you desire in the fellowship with your artist friends.  Lunch and fellowship are the best parts!

The cost is $10 a year, or $1 a session if you just want to drop in every now and then.  Pay with your dues, or you can send $10 to:
