Welcome to this week's issue of VBC Newsstand brought to you by VBCExhibitHall.com
Covid-19 played a pivotal role in accelerating years of digital health adoption, with the proliferation of telehealth at the forefront. According to a McKinsey report, telehealth utilization for office visits and outpatient care increased by 78 times between February and April 2020, as patients, providers and payers sought to navigate the safe delivery of healthcare when in-person visits ceased to be an option. Telehealth stabilized early in 2021 at 13% to 17% of all visits, across specialties, according to that same report. Yet this is only the beginning of the adoption of telehealth and the first steps toward the healthcare experience of the future.
Hospice News | March 31, 2022
Hospice providers are seeking greater clarity when it comes to quality incentives in the Accountable Care Organization Realizing Equity, Access and Community Health (ACO REACH) program. Introduced in late February, ACO REACH replaces the Global and Professional Direct Contracting (GPDC) models. CMS indicated that the program reflects its refreshed priorities for payment system demonstrations. Among these priorities are improving the quality and cost of care for beneficiaries and a focus on diversity, equity and inclusion. Providers participating in the new model “are expected to use a model of care designed to serve individuals with complex needs,” according to CMS guidelines.
As the healthcare industry focuses on value-based care, tracking data on health outcomes among patient populations will be crucial. Both population health and public health focus on improving care and outcomes across large groups of patients. While they may sound similar, population and public health have important distinctions. Population health focuses on improving health for a group of individuals and understanding the drivers of both good and bad health outcomes, explains Dr. Howard Hu, chair and professor of population and public health sciences at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California (USC).
Health systems, hospitals, and community health clinics have a substantial part to play in patients’ lives. As trusted sources of healthcare and information, US providers may help patients understand the links between unmet basic needs—or social determinants of health (SDOH)—and health while supporting patients in meeting these needs (see sidebar, “Unmet basic needs and other common SDOH terminology”). While unmet basic needs disproportionately affect Medicaid-insured patients, more than 45 percent of consumers across coverage types experience at least one unmet basic need.
