Welcome to this week's issue of VBC Newsstand brought to you by VBCExhibitHall.com
Primary care physicians (PCPs) and other physicians continue to migrate away from the traditional fee-for-service (FFS) reimbursement model toward value-based and risk-bearing care models that reward better outcomes and reduced healthcare costs. Value-based care (VBC) contracts are projected by McKinsey to cover nearly 65 million Americans, or 22% of insured lives, by 2025, up from 15% in 2021. The trend toward VBC is clear. Yet transitioning from a volume-based transactional billing model to one that incorporates financial risk and rewards tied to the patient’s health outcome is not easy.
Jack Resneck, Jr., MD, a dermatologist from San Rafael, California, was inaugurated here Tuesday as the 177th president of the American Medical Association (AMA). Resneck began his inaugural address by admitting that initially he had had some trepidation about taking the position, given “so much pain and despair in the last 2 years, in the wake of this pandemic and a politically fractured country … Questions about whether we could collectively – all of us in organized medicine – move beyond the serious challenges we face. I wondered if I could make a difference.” But then, he said, he heard a story from his rabbi, Stacy Friedman of Congregation Rodef Sholom in San Rafael (who had given the invocation at the ceremony a few minutes before Resneck began speaking). The story was about...
Now that you’ve made the decision to start your path to Alternative Payment Models (APMs), what’s the first thing you need to consider? Hint: APM revenue calculation does not top the list. Obviously, APM revenue generation vis-à-vis traditional Fee-for-Service is critical. But those calculations assume constancy of two essential “assets”—clinicians and patients. Your competition is working hard to grow these same resources for their own operations. The easiest place to get them from is your organization. If you are following the growth of practice acquisitions from investor-backed health care companies and MSOs, payer practice acquisitions and retail giant investments in primary care, the numbers should stagger you.
Algorithms play a significant role in our daily lives — they unlock our phones, tell us which movies to watch and dictate the content we see on social media. These calculations are also frequently used by healthcare providers to inform diagnosis and treatment plans, so it’s important to remember that algorithms are only as good as the data used to train them.
Much of the data used to train today’s healthcare algorithms reflects the structural racism embedded in the U.S. healthcare system, creating a bias that negatively affects health outcomes among already marginalized populations. That’s why the engineers building healthcare algorithms should move away from using race as a...
