For better chronic disease management, Boston University researchers recommend replacing the term “race” with underlying factors that indicate an increased risk for heart attacks and strokes. “If other factors (instead of race itself) determine the risk differences, then the prediction equations should incorporate those factors that cause the differences in predicted risk between the races, rather than race itself. If we do not change our prediction strategy, there is a risk of labeling (stereotyping) Black people as high risk purely based on the color of their skin,” corresponding author Vasan Ramachandran, MD, FACC, said in a press release.

The world of health care has changed a lot in the past decade, and the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) at CMS has been behind a lot of that change. Radio Advisory’s Rachel Woods sat down with Liz Fowler, director of CMMI, to talk about what innovations CMMI has worked on in the past decade and where it’s heading next. Read a lightly edited excerpt from the interview below and download the episode for the full conversation...

Like politics, it’s been said that all healthcare is local. But when it comes to the role of community-based organizations (CBO) in supporting health, payers and other stakeholders haven’t quite known how to include their closest neighbors. Add to this the rising importance of social determinants of health (SDOH), which CBOs may be qualified to identify and meet but also disadvantaged to address from a healthcare system perspective, including value-based arrangements.

For the last several years, I have wrapped up my reporting with a look back at some of my favorite quotes from healthcare stakeholders as a way to help emphasize how our publication’s coverage is reflecting shifts in industry dynamics. In 2021, there was no question that how to build health equity into payment models, data standards, and clinical care was discussed far more than ever before. It was refreshing to be able to cover so many discussions of where healthcare has fallen short in terms of addressing inequities and how it can begin to do better...

Welcome 2022 and the
FIRST EDITION of the BRAND NEW
VBC Newsstand Weekly!
|
|
The time has finally come! As we say "goodbye" to 2021 and "hello" to 2022, we are beginning a new chapter: VBCExhibitHall.com!
For the last several years, ACOExhibitHall has provided the world of accountable care with free resources (including our newsstand, library, and webinars), along with several additional benefits for our highly-valued exhibitors. After taking time for contemplation and discussion, we have decided to rebrand ourselves in order to (officially) extend our reach from accountable care organizations (ACOs) to the larger world of value-based care (VBC), as well as switch to a new website with updated graphics and features.
We have awaited this day for several months, and we are so excited to share this new chapter with all of our readers and exhibitors. (By the way, if you would like to learn more about becoming an exhibitor, please feel free to reach out to us and let us know!) As always, this newsletter, our webinars, and our resource library are all free to access!
We wish each and every one of you a very happy new year!
Sincerely,
The VBCExhibitHall Team
