Last year, researchers looked at the directories of the nation’s five largest health plans and found that four out of five entries were inaccurate. This is more than a minor inconvenience. It’s a financial blackhole for all stakeholders and a disruption, if not a complete obstruction, to patient care. Over 50% of all patients use a health plan’s provider directory to select a physician, yet persistently incorrect provider data undermines the entire system. Value-based care puts patient health and well-being front and center, but when patients can’t find the provider information they need, whether it’s a phone number or address, it causes them to delay or forgo care altogether, face unexpected medical bills, and struggle to find the appropriate healthcare services.
According to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), value-based care focuses on the quality and performance of a health care providers’ medical services, making the patient’s experience the forefront of how they receive care. Recently seen as an alternative to fee-for-service clinical care—which requires patients or their insurance plans to pay for each bit of medical care they receive—several providers and health companies have explored ideas regarding value-based care. XiFin is a health care information technology company that assists health care entities in navigating a dynamic and evolving industry. More specifically, utilizing its technology to partner with pharmacists and help improve their bottom line, XiFin delved into the pharmacy market in 2021 after it acquired OmniSYS.
The Institute for Value-Based Medicine event hosted by The American Journal of Managed Care (AJMC) in Nashville, Tennessee, on August 22, 2024, spotlighted various perspectives on specialty value-based care and explored how innovation and entrepreneurship can help adapt to the evolving health care landscape.1 Presented by AJMC and Tennessee Oncology, the event featured Katherine Baker, MD, MMHC; Samyukta Mullangi, MD, MBA; and Leah Owens, DNP, RN, BMTCN, OCN, as cochairs, with sessions on leveraging entrepreneurship and innovation to transform specialty value-based care delivery.
Let’s face it—healthcare is changing, and fast. The old fee-for-service model, where providers were rewarded for cranking out more tests and treatments, is fading into the background. Enter value-based care, a model that prioritizes patient outcomes over the number of services performed. And at the heart of this transformation? One thing: quality. But quality isn’t just a buzzword—it’s the key to delivering better care, improving health outcomes, and lowering costs. So, why exactly is quality so critical to the future of healthcare, and how is it transforming the way we approach patient care? Let’s break it down.
This week, I had the honor of delivering the opening plenary at the NAACOS 2024 fall conference in Washington, D.C., where over 1,000 leaders from across the country gathered to discuss the future of accountable care organizations (ACOs) and value-based care. As always, the event served as an exceptional educational forum, bringing together clinical leaders, administrators and policymakers dedicated to enhancing the quality of medical care for millions of Americans and making healthcare more affordable for our nation.
