Novel Approaches Are Essential for Enabling Patient-First Outcomes in Value Based Care Models

MedCity News | January 25, 2024

American healthcare is highly inefficient. Across a variety of long-term health and treatment outcomes and patient safety metrics, the U.S. has lower performance compared with countries of similar economic status, despite spending more money per capita than its peers. In 2022, the U.S. spent an estimated $12,555 per person on healthcare — the highest among Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD) countries and nearly double the average for wealthy OECD countries (excluding the U.S.). With U.S. national health expenditures expected to outpace average GDP growth between 2022 and 2031, there is an urgent need for new approaches to reduce healthcare costs, while improving health outcomes. In other words, American healthcare must become much more efficient without compromising the quality of care.

ACOs to receive $20M in advance investment payments

Fierce Healthcare | January 29, 2024

In 2024, 50 accountable care organizations are new to the Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP) and 71 ACOs renewed participation, according to new numbers released by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Monday. The total number of participants now stands at 480 ACO programs, with 245 organizations continuing in ACO REACH and the Kidney Care Choices (KCC), two types of CMS Innovation Center models. More than 634,000 providers and organizations serve nearly 11 million people in traditional Medicare. In 2022, 483 ACOs were participating in MSSP, showing a lack of overall growth in program participation.

CVS and Wexner Medical Center collaborate on ACO

Healthcare Finance | January 25, 2024

The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and CVS Accountable Care, a part of CVS Health, have announced the creation of an accountable care organization for a coordinated approach to delivering care. The new CVS ACO is a Medicare Shared Savings Program Enhanced track ACO. CVS Accountable Care was formed last year as a result of bringing together Signify Health Value-based Care Solutions with the CVS Accountable Care Organization. CVS Health won the competitive battle in early 2023 to acquire Signify Health, a company that leverages advanced analytics, technology and nationwide provider networks for value-based payment programs

The business case for health equity

Physicians Practice | January 29, 2024

When I was 14 years old, my parents moved our family home within Miami Dade County. We shifted from zip code 33157 to 33183, and as I’ve recently learned, this increased our life expectancy from ~79 years to ~86 years. My parents didn’t have a college education or any access to this type of data, but instinctively they moved toward what we all want and should have — safer neighborhoods, good schools, grocery stores with fresh foods, and job opportunities. Zip code determines up to 60% of health, and life expectancy can vary up to 30 years within a 10-mile span. Yet over 50 million Americans live in economically distressed zip codes, and we’re a far cry from all Americans having “the fair and just opportunity for every person to attain their highest level of health,” per the CDC.

Medicare ACO participation grows in 2024: CMS

Healthcare Dive | January 30, 2024

Accountable care organizations in traditional Medicare are prospering, federal regulators said in new data released Monday. However, participation in Medicare’s largest value-based care program has stayed generally the same over the last five years. Roughly 13.7 million Medicare patients this year — nearly half of beneficiaries on traditional Medicare — are in accountable care organizations, or ACOs, groups of providers that work together to coordinate patients’ care. That’s a 3% increase from 2023, the CMS said. Similarly, almost 817,000 providers are participating, compared with 700,000 last year. Participation in ACOs is important since the organizations have been shown to create better outcomes than non-ACO physician groups, and create savings for Medicare’s trust fund as the program faces rapidly approaching insolvency.
