Healthcare is undergoing a transformation and value-based care is taking center stage. American physicians are increasingly participating, with 54% of them reporting being in at least one accountable care organization. This figure jumped 10% from 2018 to 2020, according to the American Medical Association during their Physician Practice Benchmark Survey. Although participation is increasing, common challenges still threaten to steal the show. Previously we’ve discussed the challenges of healthcare interoperability, but now we are taking a deeper dive into 5 major challenges within value-based care.

The Accountable Care Organization Realizing Equity, Access and Community Health (ACO REACH) payment model will launch on Jan. 1, 2023, and hospices that collaborate with participating ACOs could realize some unique benefits. The Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation announced the program in February to replace the Global and Professional Direct Contracting (GPDC) models. The agency said that ACO REACH reflects its redesigned strategy for payment system demonstrations, with advancing health equity as a key tenet. “Accountable Care is the cornerstone of that strategy. Integration, team-based coordinated care through advanced primary care and ACOs is really the linchpin to driving better outcomes and bending the health care cost curve,” CMMI Director Elizabeth Fowler said at the National Association of ACOs (NAACOS) conference earlier this year.
It is no secret that health systems and hospitals have had a rough 2022 thus far. The pandemic led to increased operating expenses, and though COVID cases have steeply declined, the return of elective/non-urgent inpatient care has yet to fully recover. Health system leaders are working hard to flip the script and ensure patients are receiving the quality care that they need. Hospital executives have many aspects of the business to worry about, however one of their top strategic priorities is margin management. And with margin management comes a heavy focus on ways to increase revenue. Research supports what most Americans understand intuitively: A person’s health is strongly linked to where they live, learn, work and play. These variables, often stratified by race, are known as social determinants of health (SDOH), and they include everything from education and employment to food, transportation and safety. To see SDOH in action, consider that during the pandemic women with health and economic challenges experienced worsening health conditions that, Kaiser Family Foundation researchers warn, could translate into higher numbers of severe health issues in the near future.
