“Safety-net” health care organizations are a critical backbone of the US healthcare system, providing care to millions regardless of their ability to pay. Despite significant variability in how the safety-net is characterized, a growing number of definitions identify safety-net providers based on the populations they serve: traditionally disadvantaged individuals, including historically marginalized racial and ethnic minorities, low-income, and rural communities — many of whom are often insured through Medicaid or lack insurance.
This year is likely to be another big one for telemedicine. The technology-enabled form of healthcare delivery has huge momentum coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic. But at the same time, the pandemic public health emergency is scheduled to end in May, which means action is needed by lawmakers to keep reimbursement going in 2023. There’s lots going on, to say the least. Michael Gorton is founder and CEO of Recuro Health, a virtual care company that offers Digital Medical Home, which enables members in all 50 states to virtually access comprehensive healthcare services, including virtual primary and urgent care, behavioral health, at-home lab testing, genomics testing, as well as a suite of supplemental benefits. We interviewed Gorton to get his expert perspective on what may be the big trends in telehealth this year. And he offered four big ones.
ONC has released a Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) Information Exchange Toolkit to support communities working toward achieving health equity through SDOH data sharing. The national SDOH data landscape continues to evolve as healthcare organizations develop and adopt standards for SDOH information. Ensuring organizations capture and exchange SDOH data in a standardized way is critical to initiatives that address health inequities. “Though each community is unique, there are important foundational elements to consider in order to facilitate interoperability as information systems are developed and information is shared across community sectors and stakeholders,” the ONC authors wrote. According to a Feb. 23 press release, Cleveland-based The Center for Health Affairs, a regional hospital association, and Amazon Web Services (AWS) are collaborating to establish a Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) Innovation Hub. The goal of the hub is to address structural racism and poverty that result in gun violence, behavioral health crises, and other factors that negatively impact the health of local residents. The hub is going to act first locally then move globally.
