Physicians Practice | May 19, 2023
Although reports of physician burnout multiplied during the COVID-19 pandemic, it has always been a problem in health care. According to a study from the Mayo Clinic, the COVID-19 pandemic only exacerbated existing problems in the health care delivery system and took a toll on the U.S. physician workforce. This added strain impacted the quality of care, resulting in turnover and reductions in work effort. The Association of American Medical Colleges also estimates that the U.S. could see a shortage of 54,100 to 139,000 physicians by 2023 which is expected to plague both primary and specialty fields. Physician burnout remains a critical issue across all aspects of health care because it affects the quality of care, cost efficiency and accessibility to care.
In October of 2021, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) unveiled its 2030 vision to achieve “equitable outcomes through high quality, affordable, and person-centered care.” One of the objectives to achieve this goal is to focus on “advancing health equity.” Dr. Dora Hughes, the Chief Medical Officer of CMMI, recently outlined in a blog post the initiatives that CMMI has already conducted and is proposing to implement to advance health equity.
Can engaging patients with social determinants of health (SDOH) and chronic conditions, benefit from engaging with providers and others, in the context of care delivery by accountable care organizations (ACOs) and similar entities? That’s the question that a team of healthcare policy researchers has asked. The results of their research have just been published online in Health Affairs, in an article entitled “Health Care Impacts Of Resource Navigation For Health-Related Social Needs In The Accountable Health Communities Model.”
Artificial Intelligence (AI) advances are big news, but the daily onslaught of AI applications in health care is overwhelming. There’s no question that health care is fertile ground for AI. Health care is expensive, highly technical, complicated, and equally frustrating for patients and providers alike. It’s also rich in data—a mostly untapped resource for both clinical and performance improvement. These factors make health care a perfect environment for AI, which can lead to potentially better and faster treatment for patients. And, there’s lots of money in the system. Health care is also struggling with a worsening physician and staffing shortage. It threatens to become a crisis. AI has a solution for that, too, by filling roles previously occupied by humans. But can AI really substitute for physicians and other providers?
