VBCF supports research initiatives aimed at understanding and eradicating breast cancer. Thus, we actively support robust funding for the Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program (DOD BCRP) in the FY2018 DOD Appropriations bill.
In addition, the U.S. House of Representatives narrowly passed the American Health Care Act (AHCA) on May 4th. VBCF opposed the final version of this bill as it eliminates nationwide protections for individuals with pre-existing conditions, allows insurers to charge older customers up to five (5) times more than young adults, and would limit access to healthcare for thousands of Virginians. The bill now goes to the Senate where it faces an uncertain future and bipartisan opposition. The Senate may write its own health care bill that would then need to be reconciled with the House version. VBCF will continue to monitor developments. For more information about the bill passed by the House, please read the Kaiser Family Foundation’s AHCA Summary.

Support Becky’s Place @ RAM
The Remote Area Medical (RAM) Clinic in Wise County will be held on July 21-23, 2017. This clinic is the largest RAM held in Virginia and gives thousands of people what is perhaps their only opportunity to go to the doctor or dentist for the entire year. Becky’s Place is an institution at RAM Wise, with people coming back and thanking our volunteers for the information they got the previous year. Please consider making a donation in support of Becky’s Place to VBCF to help us provide cancer and chronic disease health education in far southwest Virginia. Learn more about last year’s event.

Pathways
The VBCF Education and Events committee partnered with Pathways to host “More Than a Pink Ribbon,” an educational event in Petersburg on April 20th. We had a great turnout and a very engaged audience, largely in thanks to our wonderful speakers. Dr. Billy Irvin laid the foundation with information on breast health, different kinds of breast cancers, and clinical trials. Next, Bettye Wilkerson, a Pathways clinic volunteer and survivor, shared some tips and tricks to help get people through early detection, diagnosis, and treatment. Last but not least, Michelle Smith shared her story of how she is surviving with metastatic breast cancer, and how her faith pulls her through. Thanks again to the Pathways staff and members of the Education and Events Committee who spent time organizing and hosting the event to make it a success!

Aces for Awareness
The 8th Annual Aces for Awareness was held at the Country Club of Virginia on May 5th. While mother nature did not cooperate for the tennis portion of the event, the luncheon reception, silent auction, and inspirational program by local author Nicole Unice and breast cancer survivor Jennifer Glotz Sederstrom made for a wonderful day. A huge thanks to the event’s Ace Sponsors - HCA Sarah Cannon Cancer Institute at Henrico Doctors' Hospital and Hair Cuttery and (our many other sponsors) who made this event possible! And thank you to our Event Co-Chairs’ Candace Haske and Wendy Blankenship and the many fabulous Aces volunteers for making the event such a great success!
