This Weeks Theme for VBS:
Day 3
Jonah and the Whale

Who did we learn about the last two days during VBS?

Why were Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego put into the fiery furnace and how did they come out alive?

Why was Daniel put into the Lion’s Den and how did he also come out alive?

The theme for VBS this week is “RESCUE.” How do both of these stories relate to one another and how does it relate to how we live each day here in our own lives?

RESCUE Song / Words
(watch several times each day to learn the words)
It is so amazing to learn about these Bible stories and to see how God RESCUED these people because of their faith in Him. As we continue to learn about stories in the Bible it is important to understand that being “RESCUED” and having a perfect life are not the same thing. We should love God, we should trust God, we should have faith in God, but we should also understand that sometimes difficult things in our lives will happen and that is ok. It is at these times we use our faith in God to know that he will RESCUE us because of our faith and love in him.
Jonah
Tell a story about a time someone did something to you that made you pretty upset. In fact, you may have actually been really mad about what that person did. Help the younger ones to share a story.

Now, I want you to be honest. I want you to tell a story about a time you did something that probably made someone else pretty upset or even mad. Again, help the younger ones to share a story.

Today’s Bible story is kind of different from our last two stories. This story focuses on being RESCUED, but it is more about the mercy God shows us when RESCUING us.

Take 10 – 15 minutes and google the word mercy and then write the definition on a piece of paper and post / tape it to a wall or door or something you won’t damage. Turn this into a miniature art project. Make it look nice so you can leave it hanging in your room or somewhere for a long time (adjust accordingly to age).

Now, each person starting with the adult tell a story about something mean you may have done to someone else, but someone showed you mercy. Now, have each child share a story where someone showed them mercy. Guide and help them a bunch on this activity.

Next, share a story where you showed mercy towards someone that may have done something mean or bad to you. Now have each child share a story as well.

Take a minute and discuss the different feelings you experience when you showed mercy for someone else vs. someone else showing mercy to you.

Do you feel better when you receive mercy or give mercy? Does each experience make you feel good? Explain your answer.

Video of the Day- Superbook -
Jonah - Season 2 Episode 1

You can also watch on your regular TV
if you have YouTube on the TV
Did Joy, the girl at the beginning of the video want to punish the girl that stole the bike? Why do you think she wanted her to be punished?

At the end of the video did Joy want to punish the girl that stole the bike or show her mercy? Why do you think she wanted to show her mercy?

Why is it so easy to want to see others be punished, but when we do something wrong, we expect and want others to show us mercy and to forgive us?

Today’s Bible story is a little long (not too bad), so I would recommend maybe reading chapters 1 & 2 from Jonah before making the snack. Then read chapters 3 & 4 while eating the snack.
Snack Time
Was Jonah a pretty good guy?

Were the people of Nineveh mostly good or bad people?

At the beginning of the story did Jonah want to give mercy to the people of Nineveh or did Jonah want to see all of them punished?

When the men tossed Jonah into the sea, God RESCUED Jonah by sending him into the whale. How do you think God RESCUING Jonah changed Jonah’s thoughts on showing mercy to the people of Nineveh?

Did God want to punish all the people of Nineveh or did he want to show mercy?
Tell me what you think this phrase means….(guide them on this)

“IF, YOU ARE WILLING TO ACCEPT OTHER PEOPLE’S MERCY, THEN YOU MUST BE WILLING TO GIVE OTHER PEOPLE MERCY!!!”

I want each of you to know this is very hard for all people to do and understand. That is why it’s so important to pray to God (like Jonah did when inside the whale) and ask him to help you show mercy to others. This is another way God is there to RESCUE us when we are struggling.

Closing Prayer
You got this. Believe in your words. Trust that God already knows what you plan to say. God is here to show mercy and to RESCUE each of us every day when we talk to him.
