The Foster Grandparents at Encompass are our Volunteers of the Week!
The Foster Grandparent Program at Encompass joins together two segments of the population - seniors and children. The program enhances quality of life for seniors and gives them a sense of purpose. Their presence gives parents and children an extra sense of security. The children have a consistent grandparent figure who mentors and encourages them in social play and classroom activities. Foster Grandparents are assigned to an Encompass location and volunteer a minimum of 15 hours per week. What a win-win-win situation for Encompass, the children and seniors!
The specific needs that the Foster Grandparents at Encompass address are preparing children for school readiness in regards to social-emotional development, mathematics concepts, and language and literacy concepts. Foster Grandparents work in the classrooms at one of the seven Encompass centers and work one-on-one with children who need additional guidance. Foster Grandparents follow the Encompass teachers, lead by holding babies to strengthen the child’s social-emotional development through eye contact, reading to toddlers to help engage children in literacy concepts, playing outside with children to teach children healthy social interactions, and support children during family style meals to help children reinforce fine motor skills and utilize social skills. The Foster Grandparents are truly role models for these children at Encompass by encouraging, role playing, singing and laughing with the children to help support them to participate in school readiness activities that will help these children thrive in their futures.
The Foster Grandparents at Encompass have worked continuously to make a difference in the children they serve. The Foster Grandparents that volunteer at Encompass range in the number of hours, frequency, and years of service. The Foster Grandparents range from volunteering a total of 15 hours a week to 32 hours a week and have served between 1 to 20 years of service. The Foster Grandparent Program at Encompass is an ongoing volunteer effort throughout the year that continues to shape these children’s futures. During the July 2018-January 2019 year, 93% of the children that the Encompass Foster Grandparents worked with made gains in School Readiness Concepts in the classroom. The Foster Grandparents at Encompass also work with other children in the classrooms that they are not assigned to and those children also receive positive interaction and concept learning. It has been found that children who don’t participate in school readiness education between the ages of 0 to 5 years old are more likely to not graduate high school, not attend college, struggle with violence and many more high risk factors. With the support of Foster Grandparents, Encompass is able to help the children in Brown County make educational strides for their futures.
Thank you, Foster Grandparents, for continuously working to make a difference in the children you serve.
