WPS Volunteer Awards
2019 WPS Volunteer Award nominations are open!
The Volunteer Center of Brown County is pleased to once again host the community's largest event recognizing the impact that volunteers have on our community! Made possible by event sponsor Wisconsin Public Service, along with the Greater Green Bay Community Foundation and our eight generous award sponsors – Aon, Bellin Health, Constellation, The George F. Kress Foundation, Georgia Pacific, Green Bay Packers Give Back, Morgan Stanley and United Healthcare – this event celebrates volunteers and highlights the work they do to assist nonprofits in our area to fulfill their missions.

Why take the time to submit a nomination?
It’s a powerful way to honor the impact that a person or group is having in the community! Each individual nominee and two representatives of group nominations will be our guests at the Awards Breakfast, which will take place on  Thursday, April 18, 2019 , at the KI Convention Center. All nominees will be recognized at the event.

Recipients of the awards and runners-up will receive cash prizes of  $1,000  and  $500  respectively that they can donate to the nonprofit organization of their choice. The youth recipient and runner-up will receive the award amounts as scholarships.
Submitting a nomination creates greater awareness within our community of the organization where the volunteer gives their time and energy. The deadline for nominations is  March 1, 2019 .

The nominee may also be selected by the Volunteer Center as the “Volunteer of the Week” (which runs weekly in the  Press-Gazette ) or submitted for regional and state awards following the event.

Volunteer of the Week
The Pink Flamingos are our Volunteers of the Week!

For over 30 years, the Pink Flamingos have been an integral part of the city of De Pere and the surrounding community, due to their charitable contributions. This philanthropic group was started over 30 years ago by a core group of a dozen people, but now represents over 100 volunteers. While the group is perhaps most visible for their annual softball tournament, the group is active in a variety of altruistic endeavors as they strive to support worthwhile causes in the greater De Pere community. This group has raised over $1,000,000, all of which went to benefit numerous community members in need. The diverse members of the group are driven by their common values of unity, commitment, hard work, tradition, and --of course--fun. Thanks to the diligence of the Flamingos, they have taken a small softball tournament and turned it into a community event that offers something for everyone. Likewise, the work of the Flamingos is evident in the other events they have organized, such as music festivals, fundraisers, and tournaments. Ultimately, the result of the Flamingos' work is always enjoyment for the attendees and contributions to worthwhile causes.

As mentioned, this small softball tournament that started in the early 1980s has kept its momentum and then some. The Pink Flamingo Classic softball tournament has become a De Pere staple every July. In fact, it's a reunion of sorts! Many local organizations are welcomed with open arms to sell food, soft drinks, beer, booyah, corn on the cob and more! This enables these local groups to make money for their own causes and needs. It is so successful, there is a wait-list of softball teams and volunteers.

Thank you, Pink Flamingos, for exemplifying how any group can start small to do big things!

Doctors in Recital  2020 Grant Application - Deadline Saturday, February 2
Doctors in Recital is a community event led by local physicians, which raises funds to support area programs to improve the health, wellness and quality of life in Brown County. Funds are raised to support both a community nonprofit organization and a music education partner. These beneficiaries are selected at the start of the planning year through a competitive application process. The community nonprofit organization is the primary beneficiary and receives 80% of the net proceeds raised from the year's fundraising efforts; the music education partner receives 20%. (This amount may be divided simply by the number of music partners or, if DIR partners with more than one, the amount may be based on the stated need request).

To date, almost a half a million dollars has been donated to community charities since the program's first event in 2007. The application deadline is Saturday, February 2, 2019. The Doctors In Recital board will review all applications and invite finalists to interview on February 26 or 27, 2019, with the 2020 partners announced by April 11. The 2020 concert will be held on January 18, 2020, at the Weidner Center. Note: Doctors in Recital does not support salaries/general office expenses. They also do not support musical instrument repair or purchasing unless it is part of a new educational program.
