Paula Bronander is our Volunteer of the Week
!
Paula Bronander has volunteered at Martin Elementary School for approximately 9 years. She started volunteering when her children went to Martin and has stayed well beyond them leaving Martin. Paula currently supports work in the book room and library. She is at Martin multiple times a week and over the summer for a few weeks maintaining the book room and creating materials for the kindergarten students when they come for library time. Paula has bar coded and organized thousands of books for the teachers to use in small group reading. She scans the books back in after a teacher has used them and puts them back on the shelves - saving teachers hours of time per week scanning and returning books to their shelves. Teachers use 5-10 books per student per week, so with a class of 20 students and 18 classrooms it is a lot of books. Paula completely reorganized the book room the summer of 2018, as well as volunteered during their summer library program. She is an invaluable member of their team and enjoys volunteering at Martin each week.
The book room was not bar coded previously. This is a project Paula took on a few years ago. This saves teachers hours of time per week. The bar coding system also allows staff to sort what books they have for themes, reading levels, helping them know what to order and what is missing. This takes another task that teachers had to do away from them, allowing them to use that time for something that is focused on student learning.
Thank you, Paula, for your ongoing hard work in the book room and library at Martin Elementary School!

Pals Program Mentors - Ongoing
Volunteer mentors spend time (2-3 times per month) in a recreational or learning activity with a child, age 3 or older, that has been referred by Brown County Child Protective Services. Volunteer mentors help the child adjust to the separation or loss of a parent, enhance self-esteem and confidence, and learn new skills. Matches are based on compatibility and can continue for as long as both parties are interested or until the youth is eighteen. They currently have a lengthy waiting list of boys and girls ages 3-17. Need spotlight: They have two brothers, ages 6 and 9, on the far west side of Brown County, who are in need of a positive, consistent adult role model. The boys enjoy art, crafts, sports, being outside and love superheroes. They like movies, video games and playing with Legos and action figures. They are excited to learn about and try new things. They ask that volunteers meet with their match at least 2-3 times per month for 1-2 hours each time. Minimum age: 18.
