John Shier is our Volunteer of the Week
!
As the oldest settlement in Wisconsin, Green Bay has a rich and important history. Since 1977, Heritage Hill has acquired more than 25 buildings that tell meaningful and significant stories of Northeast Wisconsin. The primary objective of Heritage Hill is to use these buildings and their artifacts to provide interpretation of the history of Northeastern Wisconsin and its people.
John Shier has been a volunteer for Heritage Hill since its inception in a variety of roles: serving as a board member, an advocate for support, a historic interpreter, providing tram rides for visitors, and a master of ceremony for their music series. He also provides financial support and encourages other community members to support this worthwhile organization. John currently donates approximately 120 hours of volunteer time per year, and in the past, the number of hours have been considerably more. He has been volunteering in various capacities since 1977. Since the tracking of hours did not exist since the beginning, it is difficult to identify the actual hours he has donated; however, it would be safe to say that John has volunteered more than 10,000 hours to help advance the mission of Heritage Hill.
As an advocate of Heritage Hill, John has done a wonderful job advancing the mission of the Park. He has met with governmental agencies, leaders of area businesses, and local foundation leaders in order to bring their attention to the value Heritage Hill brings to the area. He encourages our community to celebrate Northeast Wisconsin’s diverse regional history of people’s cultures and industries. John’s positive nature and attitude is contagious! He encourages other community members to volunteer as well. Even for an individual in his eighties, John is always willing to do anything necessary to get the job done.
Thank you, John, for
inspiring visitors to appreciate the value of what they receive at the Park.

Parent Pals - Ongoing
Volunteer mentors spend time (2-3 times per month) with parents referred by Brown County Child Protective Services who have identified an interest in having an informal support in their lives. Mentors often spend time helping parents with minor children develop new skills that empower the family to live and function in a safe and healthy manner. Matches are based on compatibility and can continue for as long as both parties are interested though the hope would be to have volunteers engaged with their Parent Pal for a minimum of 12 months.

Pals Program Mentors - Ongoing
Volunteer mentors spend time (2-3 times per month) in a recreational or learning activity with a child, age 3 or older, that has been referred by Brown County Child Protective Services. Volunteer mentors help the child adjust to the separation or loss of a parent, enhance self-esteem and confidence, and learn new skills. Matches are based on compatibility and can continue for as long as both parties are interested or until the youth is eighteen. They currently have a lengthy waiting list of boys and girls ages 3-17. Need spotlight: They have two brothers, ages 6 and 9, on the far west side of Brown County, who are in need of a positive, consistent adult role model. The boys enjoy art, crafts, sports, being outside and love superheroes. They like movies, video games and playing with Legos and action figures. They are excited to learn about and try new things. They ask that volunteers meet with their match at least 2-3 times per month for 1-2 hours each time. Minimum age: 18.
