Liliana Cervantes is our Volunteer of the Week
!
NEW Scholars is a college readiness program of Scholarships, Inc. focused on enhancing reading, writing, and character development among low-income and would-be first generation college students. Beginning in middle school and continuing through high school, we help these students on their path to college through interactive, after-school programming and parent support. The program encourages and provides opportunities for students who have a desire to be the first in their family to graduate from college, but lack the understanding and resources to attend. Through active participation and parental involvement, students can earn an incentive-based scholarship of up to $5,000 when they graduate from high school.
Liliana Cervantes serves the NEW Scholars middle school program as a high school volunteer. She mostly does administrative work for the program records and she serves as the assistant coach for the 8th grade lead coach by helping students complete homework and their activities of the week, and also helps setup prior to student arrival. She is a hard working young lady who shares her time between school, working, and volunteering for the NEW Scholars program. Although she has a busy schedule, she is always motivated to improve as much as possible and to gain further skills to help her in her future goal of becoming a nurse. She volunteers for the NEW Scholars program every Monday for three hours.
Liliana demonstrates that she enjoys volunteering with NEW Scholars by coming with a smile on her face and not missing out on programming Monday nights. Liliana is a bilingual volunteer, which helps Scholarships, Inc. with translating for our bilingual families. During their Steps to College unit, in which 8th grade students had to create a Steps to College book, Liliana focused on helping the students create their stories. She sat down with a particular student and served as a mentor for that student by helping her write in first person, but also learn what it means to write in first person vs. third person. She stayed after programming to continue to help that student complete her book before the due date. She helped her cut and paste pictures as the student wrote her story in her blank book.
She is a great asset for the NEW Scholars program and for the students. She makes sure that she serves the purpose of serving our students and families to the best extent possible.
Thank you, Liliana, for providing
opportunities for students who have a desire to be the first in their family to graduate from college!

Parent Pals - Ongoing
Volunteer mentors spend time (2-3 times per month) with parents referred by Brown County Child Protective Services who have identified an interest in having an informal support in their lives. Mentors often spend time helping parents with minor children develop new skills that empower the family to live and function in a safe and healthy manner. Matches are based on compatibility and can continue for as long as both parties are interested though the hope would be to have volunteers engaged with their Parent Pal for a minimum of 12 months.

Pals Program Mentors - Ongoing
Volunteer mentors spend time (2-3 times per month) in a recreational or learning activity with a child, age 3 or older, that has been referred by Brown County Child Protective Services. Volunteer mentors help the child adjust to the separation or loss of a parent, enhance self-esteem and confidence, and learn new skills. Matches are based on compatibility and can continue for as long as both parties are interested or until the youth is eighteen. They currently have a lengthy waiting list of boys and girls ages 3-17. Need spotlight: They have two brothers, ages 6 and 9, on the far west side of Brown County, who are in need of a positive, consistent adult role model. The boys enjoy art, crafts, sports, being outside and love superheroes. They like movies, video games and playing with Legos and action figures. They are excited to learn about and try new things. They ask that volunteers meet with their match at least 2-3 times per month for 1-2 hours each time. Minimum age: 18.
