2019 WPS Volunteer Award nominations are open!
|
The Volunteer Center of Brown County is pleased to once again host the community's largest event recognizing the impact that volunteers have on our community! Made possible by event sponsor Wisconsin Public Service, along with the Greater Green Bay Community Foundation and our eight generous award sponsors – Aon, Bellin Health, Constellation, The George F. Kress Foundation, Georgia Pacific, Green Bay Packers Give Back, Morgan Stanley and United Healthcare – this event celebrates volunteers and highlights the work they do to assist nonprofits in our area to fulfill their missions.
Why take the time to submit a nomination?
It’s a powerful way to honor the impact that a person or group is having in the community! Each individual nominee and two representatives of group nominations will be our guests at the Awards Breakfast, which will take place on
Thursday, April 18, 2019
, at the KI Convention Center. All nominees will be recognized at the event.
Recipients of the awards and runners-up will receive cash prizes of
$1,000
and
$500
respectively that they can donate to the nonprofit organization of their choice. The youth recipient and runner-up will receive the award amounts as scholarships.
Submitting a nomination creates greater awareness within our community of the organization where the volunteer gives their time and energy.
The deadline for nominations is
March 1, 2019
.
The nominee may also be selected by the Volunteer Center as the “Volunteer of the Week” (which runs weekly in the
Press-Gazette
) or submitted for regional and state awards following the event.

Kathleen Clouthier is our Volunteer of the Week!
As a volunteer with Compassus, Kathleen Clouthier makes weekly visits with patients who are nearing the end of their life. Kathleen has been volunteering since 2014 as a friendly visitor in the Compassus volunteer program. She volunteers on average 6 to 10 hours a week with hospice patients who have been given the prognosis of 6 months or less to live. The patients live in assisted living residences and nursing homes in the greater Green Bay community. Often, these individuals have few or no family visitors. Kathleen patiently and studiously creates an atmosphere of comfort and trust by providing recognition of each person's ultimate value to our community.
Hospice programs in the United States began as a volunteer organizations. Now, any certified hospice organization, as part of their Medicare funding requirements, must provide a percentage of their clinical times spent with patients in volunteer time. Through Compassus, volunteers are expected to visit patients at least twice a month. Kathleen exceeds those visit time requirements, seeing her assigned hospice patients sometimes two or three times a week. She spends as much time with each patient as they allow her to spend. She reads poetry, novels, newspapers, celebrates holidays and birthdays, and even brings in their favorite music and often a small CD player to keep in their room. Kathleen will even make a point to gather important and significant information about their life, who they are, and what matters most to them. She listens to each and every word they speak, even if the meaning of their words loses its intended purpose.
Kathleen is remarkable in her approach, because she sees each patient she visits as unique and important. She gains their trust and becomes their most valiant defender and interpreter for life's important moments. Kathleen may be giving Joan her special back rub one day and singing with Mary the next day. She does not waver. She does not turn away from the rhythms of dementia or the sorrows of the silent or the heavy work of those who are actively dying. Kathleen never makes a quick exit. She is present in that moment for as long as that moment needs to last. Kathleen is truly the quality standard bearer for what a hospice volunteer can bring to Compassus.
Thank you, Kathleen, for taking the time to learn about each patient you serve and for gladly accepting each patient as they are!

Pals Program Mentors

Volunteer mentors spend time (2-3 times per month) in a recreational or learning activity with a child, age 3 or older, that has been referred by Brown County Child Protective Services. Volunteer mentors help the child adjust to the separation or loss of a parent, enhance self-esteem and confidence, and learn new skills. Matches are based on compatibility and can continue for as long as both parties are interested or until the youth is eighteen. They currently have a lengthy waiting list of boys and girls ages 3-17. Need spotlight: They have two brothers, ages 6 and 9, on the far west side of Brown County, who are in need of a positive, consistent adult role model. The boys enjoy art, crafts, sports, being outside and love superheroes. They like movies, video games and playing with Legos and action figures. They are excited to learn about and try new things. They ask that volunteers meet with their match at least 2-3 times per month for 1-2 hours each time. Minimum age: 18
