2019 WPS Volunteer Award nominations are open!
|
The Volunteer Center of Brown County is pleased to once again host the community's largest event recognizing the impact that volunteers have on our community! Made possible by event sponsor Wisconsin Public Service, along with the Greater Green Bay Community Foundation and our eight generous award sponsors – Aon, Bellin Health, Constellation, The George F. Kress Foundation, Georgia Pacific, Green Bay Packers Give Back, Morgan Stanley and United Healthcare – this event celebrates volunteers and highlights the work they do to assist nonprofits in our area to fulfill their missions.
Why take the time to submit a nomination?
It’s a powerful way to honor the impact that a person or group is having in the community! Each individual nominee and two representatives of group nominations will be our guests at the Awards Breakfast, which will take place on
Thursday, April 18, 2019
, at the KI Convention Center. All nominees will be recognized at the event.
Recipients of the awards and runners-up will receive cash prizes of
$1,000
and
$500
respectively that they can donate to the nonprofit organization of their choice. The youth recipient and runner-up will receive the award amounts as scholarships.
Submitting a nomination creates greater awareness within our community of the organization where the volunteer gives their time and energy.
The deadline for nominations is
March 1, 2019
.
The nominee may also be selected by the Volunteer Center as the “Volunteer of the Week” (which runs weekly in the
Press-Gazette
) or submitted for regional and state awards following the event.

Dawn Gille and Pam De Quelle are our Volunteers of the Week!
The Green Bay YMCA provides an after school program at six at-risk schools in the Green Bay School District with an average of 94% of the enrolled students receiving a free or reduced lunch. The children in this program are in grades kindergarten through fifth grade. While enrolled in this program, the children eat three full meals per weekday, if they are in the after school program. The Blessings in a Backpack program allows the Y to directly provide the children a "backpack" of easy-to-prepare and ready-to-eat food for the weekend. With little access to food, some of these children may not have food again until Monday, when they return to school. The Blessings in a Backpack program would not be as successful without volunteers like Dawn Gille and Pam De Quelle. Not only do they pack bags with food for the children to take home for the weekend, they are building relationships with the children at the program site that they volunteer at.
Dawn and Pam started volunteering for the program as a Humana volunteer initiative, but now that has changed. Dawn has shared that the pair now volunteers on their own time because of the impact that this program has in the children's lives. Since Dawn and Pam started volunteering, they have packed over 4,700 bags of food that have gone to needy children in our community. Packing the food bags for the students ensures that they will come to school on Monday full of energy and ready to learn with less behavioral problems. Through this program, students are fed and the community awareness of poverty is increased.
In the fall of 2017, Dawn and Pam purchased hats and gloves for the children who didn't have them. When Dawn and Pam arrived the next week, they were excited to see the children wearing the hats and gloves they had purchased. By being at the site with the children, Dawn and Pam are able to see how much something so little, like a bag of food, a hat, or gloves, can positively impact a child's life.
Thank you, Dawn and Pam, for going above-and-beyond to make sure that each child has their basic needs met!

Pals Program Mentors
- Ongoing
Volunteer mentors spend time (2-3 times per month) in a recreational or learning activity with a child, age 3 or older, that has been referred by Brown County Child Protective Services. Volunteer mentors help the child adjust to the separation or loss of a parent, enhance self-esteem and confidence, and learn new skills. Matches are based on compatibility and can continue for as long as both parties are interested or until the youth is eighteen. They currently have a lengthy waiting list of boys and girls ages 3-17. Need spotlight: They have two brothers, ages 6 and 9, on the far west side of Brown County, who are in need of a positive, consistent adult role model. The boys enjoy art, crafts, sports, being outside and love superheroes. They like movies, video games and playing with Legos and action figures. They are excited to learn about and try new things. They ask that volunteers meet with their match at least 2-3 times per month for 1-2 hours each time. Minimum age: 18
