The Community Circles of Support GB Women's Group are our
Volunteers of the Week!
The Circles of Support (CCOS) GB Women's Group is a small group of volunteers who meet weekly, and often more, with women released from prison to assist them in making a successful transition from incarceration to the community. They create a partnership with transitioning women, offering positive social interaction, accountability and the opportunity to jointly develop plans to help these individuals become productive citizens and escape poverty. Research and experience shows that community support during the first 6 to 12 months after release is critical to an ex-offender's successful reintegration. Through their work, CCOS volunteers promote community safety and help reduce the likelihood of recidivism.
Many challenges are met by this small group of volunteers. One can only imagine the needs of the offenders as they re-enter society. No jobs, no money, homelessness, no family support, no support system at all - unless they wish to return to their old ways. Imagine being released from prison in December in Wisconsin wearing the clothes you had on in the summer years ago when you were first incarcerated. Imagine being expected to look for a job with no internet skills, professional clothing, or shower available. Imagine being released with no ID, no money, and no transportation to look for a job, yet be expected to support yourself. This group of volunteers have tutored, mentored, helped to fill out applications, driven people to interviews, job centers, doctors, court, rental properties and more. The volunteers have helped participants get a state ID or birth certificates so participants could move forward in their job search or to get assistance.
This group of volunteers has learned that not everyone appreciates the work they do, but they reap their rewards when they see a participant make it out of their old world, despite the many barriers. It is also rewarding when participants return to witness to new members that they never could be living the life they are without those sitting at the table, as they were always there for them - not to enable, but to be a role model for them to become the person that they are today.
Thank you, GB Women's Group, for passionately working with women who choose to change!
