The NEW Master Gardeners are our Volunteers of the Week!
Master Gardeners are volunteers with the University of Wisconsin (UW)-Extension who help educate the public about gardening and natural resources. Being a Master Gardener is about helping to deliver meaningful community programs that improve the well-being of individuals and communities, encourage education about the protection of natural resources, and helping others learn how to grow fresh fruits and vegetables. Master Gardeners work in tandem with UW-Extension staff and other like-minded volunteers to make a difference, helping to ensure that Brown County continues to be a great place to live, learn, and work. Together, with the local extension coordinator, Master Gardeners address identified community needs, including increasing food security, creating safe green spaces, beautification projects in the downtown area and in parks, school garden programs to promote science awareness in children, and more.
Participants in this program begin by attending the general Master Gardener training, consisting of 36 hours of classroom education on a variety of topics, including basic botany, soil science, plant pathology, entomology, fruits, vegetables, trees, annual and perennial flowers, native plants, wildlife, composting, and more. After completing the classroom instruction, and passing the final exam, these "Master Gardener interns" must then contribute 24 hours of volunteer service doing something related to horticulture in their communities. Upon completion of the volunteer service, participants are officially certified as Wisconsin Master Gardener volunteers. To maintain certification each year thereafter, 24 hours of volunteer service and 10 hours of continuing education are required. Many of their efforts focus on beautification and/or educational efforts in Brown County. In 2017, Master Gardeners worked on many projects, including the raised garden beds at the ADRC of Brown County, the Children's Garden at the Central Branch of the Brown County Library, a garden at Unity Hospice, a native plants garden at the De Pere Locktender's House and more.
Many groups do not have the time or expertise to engage in horticulture and/or beautification efforts. This is where Master Gardener volunteers shine. Since 1979, these volunteers have contributed their time and expertise in designing, implementing, and caring for beautification projects that enhance spaces throughout Brown County. In 2017 alone, they contributed 4,200 hours of volunteer time. Master Gardeners choose to volunteer for a variety of reasons. For some, this experience offers the chance to give something back to the community or to simply make a difference to those around them. For others, it provides an opportunity to develop new skills or build on existing knowledge. Many Master Gardeners enjoy sharing their knowledge and love of gardening with others. Regardless of their motivation, what unites them is the joy of gardening and the opportunity to make Brown County a great place to live, work and play.
Thank you, Master Gardeners, for sowing small acts of beautification throughout Brown County!
