Lee and Mary Sedlacek are our Volunteers of the Week as well as our WPS Volunteer Awards Small Group Runner-Up
St. John’s Homeless Shelter fills an essential role in the greater Green Bay community by serving approximately 400 individuals with emergency shelter, more than 800 individuals with services at The Micah Center, and more than 300 women at Wellspring, just this past year. St. John’s Homeless Shelter serves many who do not qualify for other shelters and services, which would not be possible without the 10,000 volunteer hours each year.
Lee and Mary Sedlacek serve as volunteers to the homeless population of adult men and women who literally have nowhere else to go. Lee and Mary Sedlacek are always willing to help where needed, but they have each found a niche at St. John’s. Lee primarily serves as a locker room attendant. He checks guest bins in and out, and always takes the opportunity to share a greeting, encouragement or have a quick conversation. He knows their names and takes an interest in getting to know them on a personal level. Mary primarily serves as a request filler. She selects clothing and hygiene items that guests request and gets to know the guest and what they like versus what would simply be functional. They know that Mary cares and wants to connect with them. Not only do the Sedlaceks help where needed, but also when needed. In a two-week span, St. John’s had three or four “snow days” at the shelter, where they stayed open to guests all day and needed extra volunteers. Lee and Mary readily showed up to serve each and every time, in addition to the three evenings they serve weekly. Their commitment is evidenced by their faithful presence.
Lee and Mary make a difference because they are so genuine. People experiencing homelessness are often labeled and judged. Their actions exude care. Because of the Sedlaceks, guests’ lives are changed and they leave better than they came. Lee and Mary Sedlacek’s commitment to serve clearly demonstrates that they value people, relationships and community. So many of the guests at St. John’s have been beaten down by people who don’t step up and who don’t show up. The fact that the Sedlaceks continually do step up and do show up is inspiring to guests, staff and other volunteers.
Thank you, Lee and Mary, for your commitment to serving the guests at St. John's!

Food Drive Pickup Driver and Helper - May 11
Be a postal carrier's shadow by venturing out on the mail route to assist in collecting food for the postal carrier's food drive. Volunteers will work in pairs and will need to have a large vehicle with ample space within their vehicle to pick up all non-perishable food items along their assigned route.
One volunteer will be responsible for driving their vehicle. The other volunteer will be the runner, responsible for picking up the food and loading it into the vehicle. The runner must be able to bend, lift, and twist for the duration of the volunteer activity. The route will take about 3 hours to complete and the letter carriers may provide you with a sign for your vehicle, and a route map.
After completing the route, volunteers will then report back to the west side Post Office on Packerland Dr. and drop off donations to be sorted. Volunteers are asked to wear tennis shoes, and dress for the weather as volunteers will be working outside. This is a rain or shine activity. Volunteers driving will be utilizing their own vehicle and MUST have a valid driver's license and insurance required to operate that vehicle in the state of Wisconsin. Volunteers doing the "running" (picking up the food by the mail boxes and loading them into the vehicle) must be 13 years of age or older. Volunteers are asked to arrive at the Post Office located at 300 N. Packerland Dr. Green Bay, WI 54303 15 minutes prior the start of their scheduled start time. Volunteers 13-16 years old should be accompanied by an adult. 9:00 am-12:00 pm.

Become a Green Bay Voyageurs Host Family
- May 18-August 1
Host a Green Bay Voyageur soccer player for the duration of the team's season (May-July). They ask that host families provide the player a place to sleep and have food available. All host families will receive season tickets for the team, 20% off team merchandise and invitations to exclusive host family events. All hosted players will be college age (18-22) and most will provide their own transportation. The Voyageurs' roster consists of players from multiple different states and countries, so the experience would be similar to hosting a foreign exchange student. The season could be done as early as July 14, and they do have some players who will only be with the team through the end of June. If your family is interested in hosting, but has certain date restrictions this summer, please contact the team to see if they can work around your needs.

Pals Program Mentors - Ongoing
Volunteer mentors spend time (2-3 times per month) in a recreational or learning activity with a child, age 3 or older, that has been referred by Brown County Child Protective Services. Volunteer mentors help the child adjust to the separation or loss of a parent, enhance self-esteem and confidence, and learn new skills. Matches are based on compatibility and can continue for as long as both parties are interested or until the youth is eighteen. They currently have a lengthy waiting list of boys and girls ages 3-17. Need spotlight: They have two brothers, ages 6 and 9, on the far west side of Brown County, who are in need of a positive, consistent adult role model. The boys enjoy art, crafts, sports, being outside and love superheroes. They like movies, video games and playing with Legos and action figures. They are excited to learn about and try new things. They ask that volunteers meet with their match at least 2-3 times per month for 1-2 hours each time. Minimum age: 18.
