Volunteer of the Week
Raquel Quevedo is our Volunteer of the Week as well as our WPS Volunteer Awards Youth Award Runner-Up

Raquel Quevedo has encompassed what it means to be a mentor and role model through her volunteer activities with the N.E.W. Scholars Program of Scholarships, Inc. Raquel has volunteered as a big-buddy, decorating t-shirts with children with autism, and at Green Bay nursing homes, where she reads to the elderly. She has baked and decorated cookies and played bingo with clients from the Aging and Disability Resource Center. She also spent numerous hours creating a picture book that teaches younger students the steps needed to go on to college. After writing her book, Raquel read her book to younger students in order to teach children who come from an economically disadvantaged or minority background the steps needed to go to college, inspiring them to pursue the dream of furthering their education.

Raquel’s biggest contribution is her regular volunteering during N.E.W. Scholars’ weekly afterschool program. During the afterschool program, she assists N.E.W. Scholar Coaches, and mentors younger Edison and Washington middle school students to do well in school and pursue college. She has provided inspiration to younger students who often do not perceive college as a realistic opportunity. Beyond college readiness, she has shown many younger N.E.W. Scholars students that volunteering is an important step in helping them pursue their dream of going to college.

Raquel has volunteered for the N.E.W. Scholars afterschool program for two years. She volunteers three hours each week, totaling almost 200 hours. She also assists with monthly parent programming. Raquel’s help during parent workshops is priceless, as she is a much-needed bilingual Spanish speaker, because the majority of families who attend only speak Spanish. She truly is an inspiration to all in our community and is only 16 years old.

Thank you, Raquel, for inspiring and helping others in our community!
