Ruth Novak is our Volunteer of the Week as well as our WPS Volunteer Awards Arts and Culture Award Runner-Up
There is often that one person that embodies the spirit of an organization. Ruth Novak is that person for Evergreen Productions. From directing the young actors’ production to managing the costume inventory and even creating new costumes when needed, this volunteer is at Evergreen Productions 20 to 25 hours per week year-round preparing for productions so they are ready for opening night. Evergreen Productions is a community-based 100% volunteer theater organization that benefits from Ruth’s tireless volunteering in so many ways. Ruth is a director for the young actor productions, a costumer for any production, a mentor for the “Kids Next Door” young actor drama club and that person who gets the job done, regardless of the task at hand.
The “Kids Next Door,” now in its third year, was started by Ruth to give the kids a chance to get together after they were in a production and continue to act. At the time of its inception, Evergreen had four young actor productions per year. Ruth added one that was 100% young actor selected, directed and performed. Without Ruth’s guidance and support, these young actors would not have this opportunity. She mentors, supervises, and counsels them in all aspects of theater operations.
Directors and leaders willing to spend time to develop young actors are difficult to find. Ruth has never said ‘no’ to a volunteer request and now serves on the Board of Directors for Evergreen to help guide the organization into the next generation of cast and crew. She supports Evergreen’s young actors with encouragement and challenges them to find their voice on the stage or their place behind the scenes. She is tireless in her devotion to the organization and without her, Evergreen would not be able to provide opportunities for young actors.
Thank you, Ruth, for encouraging and supporting the young actors of Evergreen Productions!

Food Drive Pickup Driver and Helper - May 11
Be a postal carrier's shadow by venturing out on the mail route to assist in collecting food for the postal carrier's food drive. Volunteers will work in pairs and will need to have a large vehicle with ample space within their vehicle to pick up all non-perishable food items along their assigned route.
One volunteer will be responsible for driving their vehicle. The other volunteer will be the runner, responsible for picking up the food and loading it into the vehicle. The runner must be able to bend, lift, and twist for the duration of the volunteer activity. The route will take about 3 hours to complete and the letter carriers may provide you with a sign for your vehicle, and a route map.
After completing the route, volunteers will then report back to the west side Post Office on Packerland Dr. and drop off donations to be sorted. Volunteers are asked to wear tennis shoes, and dress for the weather as volunteers will be working outside. This is a rain or shine activity. Volunteers driving will be utilizing their own vehicle and MUST have a valid driver's license and insurance required to operate that vehicle in the state of Wisconsin. Volunteers doing the "running" (picking up the food by the mail boxes and loading them into the vehicle) must be 13 years of age or older. Volunteers are asked to arrive at the Post Office located at 300 N. Packerland Dr. Green Bay, WI 54303 15 minutes prior the start of their scheduled start time. Become a Green Bay Voyageurs Host Family
- May 18-August 1
Host a Green Bay Voyageur soccer player for the duration of the team's season (May-July). They ask that host families provide the player a place to sleep and have food available. All host families will receive season tickets for the team, 20% off team merchandise and invitations to exclusive host family events. All hosted players will be college age (18-22) and most will provide their own transportation. The Voyageurs' roster consists of players from multiple different states and countries, so the experience would be similar to hosting a foreign exchange student. The season could be done as early as July 14, and they do have some players who will only be with the team through the end of June. If your family is interested in hosting, but has certain date restrictions this summer, please contact the team to see if they can work around your needs.

Pals Program Mentors - Ongoing
Volunteer mentors spend time (2-3 times per month) in a recreational or learning activity with a child, age 3 or older, that has been referred by Brown County Child Protective Services. Volunteer mentors help the child adjust to the separation or loss of a parent, enhance self-esteem and confidence, and learn new skills. Matches are based on compatibility and can continue for as long as both parties are interested or until the youth is eighteen. They currently have a lengthy waiting list of boys and girls ages 3-17. Need spotlight: They have two brothers, ages 6 and 9, on the far west side of Brown County, who are in need of a positive, consistent adult role model. The boys enjoy art, crafts, sports, being outside and love superheroes. They like movies, video games and playing with Legos and action figures. They are excited to learn about and try new things. They ask that volunteers meet with their match at least 2-3 times per month for 1-2 hours each time. Minimum age: 18.
