Volunteer of the Week
Larry Baeten is our Volunteer of the Week as well as our WPS Volunteer Awards Heart of Gold Award Runner-Up

Each nonprofit has different needs, from bread to heavy lifting. Larry Baeten learned over time what the various organizations’ needs were and made sure they were met: seniors needing help cleaning up their yard; a young mother needing diapers for her newborn; a shut-in needing groceries delivered; a child needing school supplies; a pantry needing canned goods; the homeless needing blankets, scarves, and mittens; and agencies needing furniture moved. So many community needs have been met by this individual, it is a challenge to list them all.

Larry began his volunteer journey more than 15 years ago, using his own vehicle to help the Freedom House three days per week. Soon after spending time there, he realized they did not have a use for some of the donations they received. In his generous mind, he wanted to find a good home for those donations, so he searched for a need in the community. Learning that the Kingdom Come Pantry had a need, he started dropping items off there on Tuesdays. While there, he discovered they had items they could share as well, which led him to St. John’s Lutheran Church, but it does not stop there.

They had things to share with others, too, which led him to De Pere Christian Outreach, then St. Willebrord Parish, Howe Community Resource Center, The Salvation Army and Operation Christmas Child. So, he started a convoy of giving from place to place, delivering items that each charity could fully utilize. Larry’s volunteer efforts have benefited many agencies and many individuals over the years. What was so unique in what he did was his ability to match resources to those who could make use of them. When talking to him, you can see the passion for helping others in his eyes.

Thank you, Larry, for working hard to meet the needs of those you see around you!
