Volunteer of the Week
Cheryl Tyson is our Volunteer of the Week !

Green Bay Area Operation Snowball (OSB for short) is a teen leadership organization that works to empower high school students to lead substance free lives by providing opportunities for leadership development as well as personal and social growth. OSB has two lock-in weekend retreats each year. Teens that attend these events stay for the entire weekend, they arrive in the evening on Friday and are there until Sunday afternoon.  Since the teens stay the whole weekend, Operation Snowball must make sure they are well fed, which requires a team of people. The leader of this team is their volunteer chef, Cheryl Tyson. Cheryl started volunteering with OSB under their previous chef, Mike. About two years after she started volunteering with OSB, Mike decided he was going to take a step back and Cheryl volunteered to take his spot without any hesitation. She has done an incredible job taking over the responsibility of cooking and meal planning for the weekend retreats.

Cheryl works hand-in-hand with the adult directors of Operation Snowball to coordinate the number of volunteers she will need for meal prep time, clean-up time, serving time, and more. She has also worked to create a master spreadsheet to store recipes and the necessary supplies she needs throughout the weekend to make sure that the team is fully prepared and they have everything they need. By using her master spreadsheet, she works to make sure that the food expenditures are not astronomical, while still providing great meals for the attendees and volunteers. She also plans separate meals for any teens with food allergies or sensitivities. She makes sure that everyone has something to eat and that no one will go hungry. Cheryl has successfully planned meals and coordinated a team of volunteers beneath her to make sure that all meals (a total of 6 throughout the weekend), as well as snacks and beverages go off without a hitch. This is so incredibly important when serving many hungry teens and volunteers. She has brought new ideas and lots of options for meals to the teens that are attending these retreats. The attendees are always so excited for her homemade mac ‘n cheese and Rice Krispie squares – they are definitely favorites!

By working with a small team of volunteers and coordinating with the director team, Cheryl has really revitalized the kitchen team. She also uses her time in the kitchen to get to know her team and develop great friendships! Many people that have volunteered on her team have said how much they truly appreciate her willingness to help in any capacity, but also that she’s not afraid to ask for help if she needs it; which is an amazing quality for a team leader.

Thank you, Cheryl, for ensuring the attendees and volunteers at each Operation Snowball retreat are well fed!
