Volunteer of the Week
CJ Janus is our Volunteer of the Week as well as our WPS Volunteer Awards Education Award Runner-Up

Kids who do not read proficiently by the 4th grade are four times more likely to drop out of school. Statistics show that 90% of children who have difficulty reading can be successful readers with early intervention. To address this need, The Volunteer Center of Brown County offers a Reading Coaches for Kids volunteer tutoring program designed to increase students’ reading abilities and academic success.

CJ Janus is dedicated to this mission and has been working with at-risk students in first and second grade classrooms at Chappell Elementary School for more than three years. Many of the students CJ works with struggle to get their daily reading done at home at night. She helps them do their assigned reading, and practices the sight words with them in order to build up their reading vocabulary. CJ continues to work with students as they have grown from kindergarten through 1st and 2nd grade at Chappell Elementary School, continuing to help them improve their reading.

She has also built lasting relationships with those students, visiting when they move on to another grade, joining them at recess, remembering their birthdays, and bringing them small gifts to brighten their days. CJ comes prepared to volunteer, and she gives 100% while she is with the students, working to keep them engaged. CJ wants what is best at all times for the students she is working with and often stays beyond her “reading hours.”
CJ is the definition of volunteerism! The students look forward to their weekly sessions with her because she is dedicated, compassionate and always willing to share a smile.

Thank you, CJ, for helping to improve the future of our community in more ways than one!
