From the desk of Dr. Callae Walcott-Rounds
I was recently at a VCCC alumni gathering in Franklin Canyon (the best kept secret of LA!), talking with one alum about the state of the world, and all of the horrendous hardships in this year for many—in our country, and in the world. He commented that we must take in the pain of the world, and find a balance within ourselves that allows us to keep our equilibrium.
This is easier said than done. And sometimes, especially in our clinical practice, not desirable at all.
As therapists (who are also in treatment), we undergo this same destabilizing process in the quest for growth. Psychoanalytic wisdom from esteemed clinicians Betty Joseph and Margot
Waddell urge us to sit deeply in our experience in the room, to resist “knowing about” our patients (or ourselves), and engage with “experience in”. In our therapeutic efforts, psychic disequilibrium is needed in the path toward real and substantial growth.
I applaud all of us who are on this continual journey, especially when we can relinquish a prior “knowing” and open to the uniqueness of the present moment.
Thank you for your support of our work!
Warmly,
Dr. Callae Walcott-Rounds
