Danville Youth Health Equity Leadership Institute (YHELI) Ends its 2018 Summer Session
|
|
Danville YHELI concluded its 2018 summer curriculum with a well-rounded program of enriching activities for its students.
The curriculum enhanced critical thinking, leadership, and educational attainment, as well as, had the students explore career paths, higher educational opportunities, and train to be mentors to incoming freshmen.
“The Danville YHELI has become my home away from home and is making me the greatest I can be,” shared a rising-junior at George Washington High School (GWHS) at the end of a summer session.
This summer, three returning alumni of GWHS shared their college experience and real-life examples of utilizing the skills Danville YHELI teach during a panel discussion. Alumnus,
Danville Jeffers, even offered to visit again to share tips to graduate college debt-free as she earned over $100,000 in scholarships during her senior year at GWHS.
The Danville YHELI program supports the Healthy People 2020 goal of increasing on-time high school graduation rates.
Shani Gaylord, Danville YHELI program manager, manages the program which is a five-year grant initiative funded by the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Minority Health, through the State Partnership Initiative to Address Health Disparities.
