VIRTUAL EVENTS GROUP

When we started the Virtual Events Group, Generative AI was relegated to research labs. This week we’ve launched a new “tools'' section in our database that is focused on AI tools you’ll want to use to create better events and presentations.

Learning to Work with AI Tools

Event planners will be learning to work with AI tools. At first, it will be primarily as idea generators, whether that’s color and design schemes, or even agenda planning. Case in point, this week I asked ChatGPT to create an event agenda for a high tech agricultural conference, very similar to one I’m speaking at.

Here are the prompts I gave it:
Create an event agenda for an agriculture show that focuses on how technology can aid agriculture. Include metaverse, digital crops, VR, and blockchain. This is a one day event in Arizona.

Yes, I would do some tweaking but notice how it knows how to vary not just the topics, but the type of presentation from panel, to the keynote, to networking time.

PCMA Tackles Events Challenges, All at Once

Sometimes belt buckling also means increasing power in numbers through reach. At PCMA (Professional Conference Managers Association) the biggest news was made by the Association itself. A slew of acquisitions, mergers and partnerships were announced. For starters, they acquired the Event Leadership Institute, which offers 17 certificates in specialized areas of planning education. These augment its own courses.

They also acquired the U.K.-based Event Marketing Association, which has 800 event-marketing professionals based in Europe who work for global brands. The combo is meant to more closely align marketers and event planners.

They also announced a sustainability partnership with the American Geophysical Union, an association of earth and space scientists, to develop more effective education on the events industry’s climate-change strategies, and another partnership with the National Coalition of Black Meeting Professionals to solve some of the industry’s inclusivity issues.

It’s quite ambitious to tackle some of the major obstacles facing the events industry in one bold swoop. Sustainability, climate change, inclusion and diversity, and aligning the education of marketers and planners. As always we’ll see how much meat lies under the fat of announcements.

Event Philosophy De Jour

Here are three wildly different views to consider:

  • Skift asked Kai Hattendorf, CEO of UFI, The Global Association of the Exhibition Industry, for his vision of the business trade show in 5-10 years. His prediction? A shift towards less product-focused show floors and more conversation-driven spaces. Hattendorf also sees a heavy emphasis on sustainability. Listen to the full episode. Note to self: Exhibitors in the traditional sense are going to have the hardest period of readjustment to new event models.
  • The Digital Speaker has an essay that is betting on the refinement of phygital events, using concerts and sporting events as the best examples of going live and virtual simultaneously. And elsewhere our friends at Cointelegraph are betting that Web3 has the biggest influence on events in the future with the blockchain at its heart.
  • Finally, over at Martech they expect marketers to extricate themselves from the crypto mire and use NFTs and metaverse as part of basic Marketing 101 to foster loyalty and engagement. What about the rest of you futurists? Any crystal balls (or Magic 8 balls)?

AI Tools of The Week

  • Luma.AI lets you create 3D models from 2D images just by walking around any object with your iPhone. Luma.AI captures three-dimensional images using a technique known as Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF), which is similar to the ray-tracing technique that makes the graphics in high-end gaming look so realistic. They are experimenting with text-generated 3D images as well.
  • Lensa is an app that lets you upload 10 to 20 selfies and then pay a few dollars for a pack of magic avatars, with names like Fairy Princess, Fantasy, Stylish, Light and others. The app then provides a finished photo of you as one of these avatars. A narcissist’s dream.

NAB Show’s "Creator Squared"
The NAB Show brings the world of broadcasting, audio and video to life during its 3-day show in Las Vegas. This year, Jim Louderback and the Virtual Events Group are working together to connect the dots between the burgeoning creator economy and the host of new tools, distribution channels and talent they bring to the industry. We’ll be sponsoring roundtables, panel discussions and networking events. Find out more

Le Mans Goes Virtual
Peugeot geared up for months to produce the 2023 24 Hours of Le Mans Virtual, an esports event where participants drove virtual cars around virtual tracks as onlookers watched (virtually). The 24 Hours of Le Mans Virtual event not only marks its first appearance in the Le Mans Virtual Series, but also Peugeot Sport’s debut in racing esports as a whole.

Virtual racing is less expensive to produce, certainly less dangerous and great for the brand. That said, esports net and nearly every other publication that followed the Le Mans Virtual called it a $#1T Show based on myriad technical difficulties.

Your Day in Court
The DoNotPay App is being billed as the world’s first robo-lawyer, powered by AI (in particular Watson). When it was first introduced, the app’s main purpose was to help disgruntled drivers fight their parking tickets. As time passed, DoNotPay added more features and services to help customers accomplish different tasks, such as ending tough-to-cancel subscriptions and earning refunds owed to them. So fight that parking ticket with AI by your side.

Davos

We weren’t there, but we sure hope they’re accomplishing more than growing more famous and appearing in disguise.

PS. The WEF (producers of the DAVOS event) announced they're building a metaverse of their own with the help of Microsoft and Accenture.

The End of Events, The Dawn of Engagements

To succeed in the new world of data, experiential gatherings, and the element of delight, traditional events are due for re-invention. We have come not to praise Caesar, but dust him off a bit.
