MSCR Clubs and After School Programming Coming Soon!

The first MSCR clubs and activities will start the week of October 4th. Clubs will meet after school and will be done at 5pm. As staffing becomes available we will run Rec from 5-6pm.

The best way for parents to get club information is right here in the Hamilton Headlines. Students will also get information from weekly in-school HTV announcements and through the MSCR Google Classroom. Students will get the Google Classroom code from their homeroom teachers this coming week.

A note about transportation:
MSCR can not guarantee access to transportation at the end of programming at this time. MSCR continues to work with local transportation providers and will add in transportation options as soon as they are available. In the meantime, if your child needs transportation support to access MSCR programs, please contact the MSCR Site Director for access to Metro tickets, once specific programming information is shared.

Please check back here in the newsletter for more information in the coming weeks.
Free and Reduced Lunch Applications
This school year, all MMSD students can receive free meals under the USDA's Summer Seamless Option program. All Hamilton Middle students are eligible for breakfast and lunch meals at no charge.

Under this program, we are required to promote and process applications for free and reduced priced meals because these applications establish a household's eligibility for other benefits, such as fee waivers for MSCR, field trips, materials, etc.

If you feel that you are eligible for household benefits under the the free and reduced priced lunch program, please complete the application by September 15 to ensure your family receives the benefits you are due. Thank you!
Sixth Grade WIN: The Fifth Academic Class
For those of you with children in sixth grade, you may be wondering about a class on your child's schedule called Academic Foundations. Despite its name on your child's schedule, for us this Period 5 sixth grade class is called WIN. WIN stands for "What I Need" and is designed to meet students 'where they are' primarily in English Language Arts and Math. Like most middle schools, all students at Hamilton have five academic classes. Students at all grades have English Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, and Science on their schedules. Students in grades seven and eight have a World Language class (Spanish or French) to round out their academic schedules with a fifth class. World Language classes are not offered in sixth grade, yet a fifth academic class is required. In the past, this fifth class at sixth grade focused on an extra period of Reading for all students.

This year, the fifth class of Reading has been replaced with our WIN class. For this class, our team considered available assessment data to assign students to WIN focus areas. Many of our students will still be in classrooms with a focus on reading and writing, but our differentiated approach allows us to provide an additional scoop for students in need, while providing exploration opportunities for students who are more proficient and advanced in their ELA skills. The same is true for math where students can be provided an additional boost, or an opportunity to explore concepts not necessarily covered in any typical math class.

We are starting the year with a short course in WIN, running from now through October 8. In October we will reshuffle our WIN groups based on assessments that the students are currently taking. These new groups will start in mid-October and run until the end of the semester, when new assessment results will be used to reset groups for the second semester of the school year.

WIN classes currently meet every day, Monday through Friday. Beginning in October, WIN groups will meet Monday-Thursday, and on Fridays all students will self-select into reading groups that focus on various genres such as historical fiction/adventure, fantasy/Sci-Fi, racial justice, coming of age, etc. Quarter and Semester grades for students in WIN will be based on a Pass/Fail system.

Reporting an Absence
There are three different ways to let us know that your child will be or is absent from school. You just need to use one of these ways to report your child absent.

Attendance Line (608) 204-4702: Call our attendance line day or night and leave a message that your child will be absent.

Main Office Phone Number (608) 204-4620: If time got away from you and school has already started, you can also call our main office phone number to talk to one of our friendly Hamilton front office workers to report your child absent.

Online Reporting Form: You can also report your child absent from school by using our MMSD online absence reporting tool that can be found at this link. Once at the link, click on the 'Reporting and Absence' dropdown, and then click the blue 'Report Your Child Absent' button. Note that this process will require you to log into your parent Infinite Campus account.

Covid Note: If your child is absent due to an actual or suspected covid-19 infection, we ask that you contact our school Health Office so we can plan for or conduct contact tracing as needed. Health Office: (608) 204-4632.
