Vol. 3, Issue 36
Added Minutes to School Year
Overview: Earlier this week, the school district communicated with all families about the addition of asynchronous (self-directed) minutes to our schedule for the remainder of the school year. These minutes are being added as a replacement for the three school days that were canceled on January 3-5.
Minutes: The minutes are designed to be accessed by students independently while at home. There will be no Zoom meetings or live instruction. The minutes of self-directed student work are as follows:
Mondays: 120 minutes each Monday (April 25, May 2, 9, 16, 23, and June 6)
May 27: 420 minutes (This is a day that was already scheduled as a non-school day for students)
Accessing Student Work: Students will access computer based work through their Classlink account including Achieve3000, PowerUp, and iReady MyPath or similar program. These literacy and math based programs are familiar to students and adjust to the specific level of each individual student. In addition, all students will have access to Advance Learning lessons that span ELA, Math, Social Studies, and Science.
Grading of Work: While students are encouraged to participate in the assigned work, completion or non-completion of the assignments will not impact a student's overall grade in any class.
Lack of Internet Access: The school district is partnering with local libraries and organizations where students can work if there is a need for internet access. For students who have no way to access the internet: Parents may contact their child's Advisory teacher who will coordinate the provision of physical materials for continued learning.
Students with Identified Special Needs: Some students with identified special needs are unable to access online instructional programs and materials provided by the school. For these students, the district's draft plan is to increase students' SDI minutes across the remainder of the school year during regular in-person school days to make up the time. More information to follow.
Attendance: The only day for which there may be a need for some sort of attendance taking will be May 27. When the district provides information on attendance for this day, it will be shared with you.

Thank you for your patience as we navigate this end of year change!
Yahara River Writers Acknowledgements
In February we had five Hamilton writers distinguish themselves as Finalists for our district's submissions to the Yahara River Writers contest sponsored by the Greater Dane County Advanced Learners Network. The finalists included Natalie C., Gabriel U., Zselke V., Libby M. and Nadim A. Two of our finalists placed in the top ten for the region: Nadim and Libby. The top ten winners are invited to the Yahara Top Ten Celebration Event at UW-Madison's Union South on May 10th. This yearly contest is open to all students and usually has a late December deadline. Congratulations to all of our talented writers! Keep on writing!
Soft Spaces
Two newer spaces inside our Hamilton Middle building this year include "soft spaces" for students and staff members. Schools are typically filled with hard edges and solid surfaces, so having some alternative softer locations available can go a long way in providing both comfort and creative thinking. The photo with the hanging chair is designed as a calming space for students, while the second photo is designed as a staff member and teacher team work space.
8th Grade: West Movin' West
For our 8th grade families, please be aware of the in-person Movin’ West program scheduled for May 9 in the West High Auditorium at 7pm. See the below link for more information about this event and the transition to high school at West.
