MMSD Pandemic Safety Protocol Update
By John Burkholder, Principal
The school district has developed new pandemic safety protocols for schools as we move closer to September and the start of school. Keep in mind that due to the shifting nature of the pandemic, safety protocols are continually updated, added, and/or deleted. At this point I simply want to include you on the current thinking for the start of school in September.

First Things First: Safety begins at home for all of us. It is critical that if your child exhibits any new symptoms that are associated with covid and/or has had a recent known exposure, they need to stay home from school. I can't emphasize this point enough! We will be doing the same as staff members. Now, on to school day safety measures.

Masks: Required at all times while inside our building, except when eating or drinking. Students are also expected to wear masks while riding buses to and from school. As we move into fall, students will be able to remove their masks while outside.

Social Distancing: Because of universal mask wearing, we will be moving to a desired minimum of three feet for social distancing. On buses, we will be able to have students in the same seat (on yellow buses) with masking in place.

Covid Testing: All student and staff members will have access to testing in our school health office. Students will need parent permission. Students testing positive or for whom a test can not be obtained after suspected exposure or being symptomatic must stay home and quarantine for 7 to10 days depending on the type of test used or absence of a test.

Contact Tracing: Any student identified as a close contact for exposure but who was fully masked or fully vaccinated at the time of exposure will not need to be tested or quarantined unless they become symptomatic.

Parents, Visitors and Volunteers: Unfortunately, we still can not have visitors inside our building with the exception being unique circumstances necessary to meet the needs of individual students.

Special Events: At this time, indoor special events such as open house, concerts, and dances are not allowed. We are hopeful that these events will be returning to our campus sometime during the coming school year.

More detailed information will be shared prior to the beginning of school as schedules and routines specific to Hamilton are developed.
Be a Special Education Assistant at Hamilton
In the coming school year we are adding five Special Education Assistants to our staff here at Hamilton Middle. Four of these positions are in the process of being filled, with one to go! Full health benefits come with the remaining position that is currently available. Here are some quick details:
Position: 35 hours/week. This position includes full benefits.
Starting Pay: Currently set at $15.77/hour (may be increased for fall of 2021).
Special Education Assistants (SEAs) work with students who have identified special needs. SEAs work mostly just the days that students are in the building, with just a couple of additional days across the year for professional development. SEAs only work during the school year and have the same holiday and summer schedule as students.
Interested? Respond to this email to let us know that you are interested and someone will be in touch with you soon. I am hoping to fill this position in the near future. Thank you!
Summer Orientation Cancelled
In our previous newsletter we indicated that we hoped to have an orientation meeting for incoming sixth grade families and for seventh grade families who have yet to be inside our building. Unfortunately, given the above described MMSD covid safety protocols, we are at this time not allowed to have this type of event. Again, as the days and weeks move along, we will update you on any changes. Thank you for your understanding. Note: If your child has a special circumstance such that a visit to our building at some point this summer is critical, please respond to this email and someone will be in touch.
The Amy's
Madison Magazine is working to spread the word about a new program they are launching in partnership with Mike Gannon and the Amy & Jocelyn Memorial Fund — The Amys.

Ever since the tragic deaths of Amy and Jocelyn Gannon, Madison Magazine's editorial team has wanted to figure out a way to honor and continue the legacies of these two women. After much discussion, Madison Magazine has partnered with Mike Gannon to launch The Amys. The plan is to give out five awards to five women in categories they think speak to the impact Amy and Jocelyn made in the word. Mike Gannon decided this was the right fit to also include financial gifts for each award that will come from the Amy & Jocelyn Memorial Fund. Madison Magazine hopes to make this an annual award program.

One of the awards is the Jocelyn Scholarship, which the magazine hopes to present to a young woman younger than 18 each year. Jocelyn was the picture-taker in the Gannon family, and she aspired to be a professional photographer. This award will go to a young woman (18 or younger) from the Madison area who has a passion for photography or hopes to pursue photography professionally. This scholarship award winner will receive a $1,000 gift from the Amy & Jocelyn Memorial Fund to go toward camera equipment, photography training or a college fund. The nomination details can be found here, and the form to nominate is here. The deadline to nominate is Aug. 13. Here also is a PDF with all of the information

Recipients of this years honors will be Madison Magazine's November cover story where winners will be profiled.
