A Short Note as We Head Into Spring Break
By John Burkholder, Principal
I heard someone say recently that "It's not about how we spend our time, but who we spend it with." As we head into spring break I wish you more than anything quality time with those people who are important in your lives. Over this past year we have learned not to take anything for granted, and I for one will be celebrating and holding tightly to even the smallest of moments spent with my family.

As Hamilton staff members, we will return to working on our campus shortly after spring break. We will continue our work to prepare physical spaces for students participating in face-to-face schooling. We will also work to configure new technology in classrooms that include webcams that will track a teacher's movement and voice as they move about the room, teaching those students joining virtually, and those joining face-to-face. Our students bring to us a richness of culture, language, race, gender orientation, religions, and world views that make our time together, whether in-person or virtually, a high quality experience.

When we come back as a staff we also recognize that racism still runs deep in our nation. Most recently the events in Georgia have brought to the surface racism directed at Asian Americans. To our Asian students and families, and to all our students and families across all measures of diversity, I want you to know that we welcome you, we honor you, and we celebrate and hold tightly to the time we spend with you. I once again invite all members of our community to join us in ensuring that Hamilton Middle is a welcoming place for all.
Project Soapbox
Project Soapbox is a nationwide opportunity to amplify student voices. Sponsored by Mikva Challenge, Project Soapbox is a series of lessons that help students identify an issue they care about and to then develop and deliver a persuasive speech on why others should care about the issue too. This helps them begin to think about and envision what change could look like. As part of 7th grade social studies curriculum, all students developed a Soapbox speech with one student from each class moving on to the district wide event. Ten students were selected district wide as Project Soapbox finalists for MMSD and were invited to share their speeches live. Hamilton seventh grade student Maliha was one of those ten. Congratulations, Maliha!
A Conversation with Maliha, Project Soapbox District Level Finalist

What was the Soapbox experience like for you?

My biggest takeaway is that my voice or better yet youth voices are a significant aspect in shaping the community we want. My experience was more a realization that if you want something you must do it yourself, to which I am unifying my humanity into the society I so vividly envision.

Why did you choose your topic?

Growing up my family never shied away from the reality of my skin. They never gatekept important and valuable information and I am grateful for that. I chose the topic because I always had knowledge on it, and to me, it’s something everyone talks about, in the sense of Racial Discrimination is a real thing. But I feel as though no one ever understands it. I want to be the person to convey the reality of the past and to help make the future that much brighter.

What is your favorite line from your speech?

“Imagine a world where opportunity and unity's paths cross where silence doesn’t seep into the whole-hearted people of the world and cut deeper than noise ever could.” This is one of my favorite lines from my speech because it holds the value of what your silence can institute if you don’t speak up. I feel as though so many people don’t see the advantage their voice gives until they use it to the advantage of humanity itself.
