September Principal Update
By John Burkholder, Principal
Our first two days were a success with happy and excited students once again on our campus in large numbers. Teachers and all staff members were well prepared and did tremendous work to reconnect with our students. Students did a great job following our mask protocols, and we were able to test systems around both eating indoors and outdoors. All in all it was a successful first two days!

Of course, there is an exception or two. Our bus transportation is still coming into place, and there are many of you rightly concerned with issues around getting your children to and from school each day. I am also well aware of the concerns surrounding crossing guards and am advocating for a solution to this issue as well. Believe it or not, even as principal there are things that I cannot directly control, and bus service and crossing guards are two of those things. However, I do carry a strong voice of advocacy and will continue to advocate in the best interest of our Hamilton community.

Enjoy the Labor Day weekend!
Covid Notification Protocol
It's bound to happen. We have nearly 800 people in our building at any given time, so eventually I believe that as principal, I will need to let you know about one or more instances of positive covid cases in our building. When I provide this notice to you, please know that I will be following notification protocols that are required at all schools.

Close Contact: First, when we become aware of a positive test for covid on our campus, we will conduct contact tracing to identify potential individuals with close contact. In a nutshell, if your child was in the same classroom as the individual who tested positive but was not within three feet of the identified individual for 15 or more minutes, and students had been wearing their masks appropriately, then there is no close contact. If we believe that your child was indeed a close contact with an individual who has tested positive, you will be contacted by our Health Office and provided with additional information, which will include directions on any need to quarantine.

Blanket Letter: While I know that it may cause concern for many of our families, I am required to notify ALL families anytime there is a positive case of covid on our campus. I am not allowed to share with you the name of the person who tested positive, or whether that individual is a student, staff member, or visitor. In addition, I am not allowed to share any information on the grade level associated with the case. Please know that if you receive the blanket letter and were not contacted by our Health Office that we did not find evidence of close contact for your child in our contact tracing efforts.

Tracking Total Cases: The school district is maintaining a public dashboard so that anyone can see the number of cases that have occurred in total for our district and at any given school. You can access this covid tracking dashboard at this link. Please note that the dashboard includes information pertaining to anyone who may have been in our building prior to the beginning of the school year when students arrived.
West Football Games Reminder
Tonight is the first home game at Mansfield Stadium in about two years for our Madison West Regents. I encourage our students to attend games when it works for families. That said, there is a policy that middle school students are not allowed entry into West home games without a parent. This has been a standing practice for the past few years at West.
