"I have vetoed similar bills three times before because of what I view as unreasonable interference into university management... I believe this bill goes too far and could potentially limit the UC's appropriate contracting."

-  Governor Jerry Brown's Veto Message for AB 2361, which would have required reporting on contracts for the University of California, echoing VICA's position.

Hot Issues

Transportation
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti joined business and labor leaders on Wednesday to urge voters to reject Proposition 6. Garcetti echoed VICA's position when he said that a repeal of the state's new gas tax could delay transportation projects across the state.

Infrastructure
Los Angeles could roll back rules preventing streets from being repaved. Due to policy dating back to the great depression, 374 streets in Los Angeles were ineligible to be repaved for decades. Councilman Bob Blumenfield has recommended to draft an ordinance to repeal the old rules and bring the streets back into public use, making them eligible to be repaved.

Healthcare
Kaiser Permanente has reached a tentative labor agreement with an alliance of union health care workers in eight states and Washington, D.C. that includes more than 30,000 workers in Southern California. It must now be ratified by union members.

Technology
The new VICA-opposed net neutrality laws have prompted a lawsuit from the Federal Government. Federal officials say that the new law oversteps the state's regulatory authority by regulating aspects of interstate commerce.

New Law
California has become the first state to require women on corporate boards of publicly traded companies. The measure requires at least one female director on the board of California-based public corporations by the end of next year.

Are You Registered to Vote?
The election is less than 5 weeks away, and while all eyes may be on the national stage, the 2018 election will have massive ramifications here in California.

This election matters. Make sure you and your employees are registered to vote, and check out the VICA Voter Guide to learn more about these critical issues.

Oppose City Council's Proposal to Misuse Taxpayer Dollars
VICA opposes the proposal by the City Council to establish a "right to counsel" ordinance for tenants facing an eviction case. Tenants, including tenants who have failed to pay their rent or caused damage to a property, will have the right to a free attorney under this proposal. This policy creates an unequal playing field for small rental property owners with already limited resources as they will be forced to fight eviction cases against tenants who have broken their lease agreement. Establishing a Right to Counsel program in Los Angeles will be a significant misuse of taxpayer dollars and prolong the already lengthy eviction process.
Join Assemblymember Nazarian at VICA's Government Affairs Committee
Join us at the VICA office on Wednesday, October 17th at noon for VICA's October Government Affairs Committee meeting and hear the latest legislative update from Assemblymember Adrin Nazarian. Nazarian represents the 46th Assembly District.
