Hot Issues

Government Shutdown
Impacts of the shutdown aren't limited to federal employees.  Businesses are feeling it as consumer spending slows. VICA member Jane Skeeter, CEO of UltraGlas Inc., has noted a slowdown in business.

The economy is booming, but for many schools, the costs of pensions, health care and special education outpace new revenue they're receiving from the state.

PG&E is exploring filing some or all of its business for bankruptcy protection as it faces billions of dollars in liabilities related to fatal wildfires in 2018 and 2017, according to reports.

For the third year, California has 70% of the nation's priciest ZIP codes when it comes to home sales, according to a new report.

Governor Gavin Newsom unveiled his $209 billion budget to boost schools, healthcare and fight poverty. The budget relies on a record-setting windfall of tax revenues to boost schools and healthcare while adding significant one-time spending to address the states homelessness epidemic.

Assemblymember Luz Rivas Discusses San Fernando Valley Jobs
Presenting sponsors Gil Canizales ( Anheuser-Busch), Ron & Mitch Kramar ( Kramar's Iron & Metal Inc.), Assemblymember Luz Rivas, presenting sponsor Eric Gutierrez ( Anheuser Busch), VICA Chair Lisa Gritzner ( LG Strategies), VICA board member and presenting sponsor David Meza ( Southern California Gas Company)

On Thursday, VICA members met with Assemblymember Luz Rivas  for the first VICA After Dark of 2019. Members enjoyed appetizers and drinks hosted by Anheuser-Busch  as they heard remarks from Assemblymember Rivas. Rivas discussed her experience in the first week of the new legislative session and excitedly told VICA members about her new committee assignments. Rivas also touched on her desire to bring businesses and jobs to her district. She expressed a strong interest in manufacturing, and an interest in connecting young people with jobs in this critical sector of our economy. The Assemblymember stressed the importance of working with the business community to create a thriving economy, saying, "If businesses are doing well, they are hiring more people - then our working families are doing well."

Thank you to our presenting sponsors, Anheuser-Busch, Kramar's Iron and Metal Inc. and the Southern California Gas Company as well as our co-sponsors the American Chemistry Council, City of Hope and the Southland Regional Association of Realtors, and our friends of VICA sponsor, Boething Treeland Nursery, Co.

VICA Urges Teachers and School District to Avoid a Strike
VICA and other Los Angeles business associations released an open letter to Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Superintendent Austin Beutner and United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA) President Alex Caputo-Pearl urging further negotiation to avoid a teachers' strike. VICA stressed the devastating impact a strike would have on students, teachers, parents, and workers. VICA recommended that both parties work towards a resolution that is both fair to teachers and allows LAUSD to remain fiscally solvent. VICA also offered to lend a hand to help advocate for increased education funding from Sacramento.

AT&T and City of Los Angeles Unveil Earthquake Early Warning App
Rhonda Johnson (AT&T) unveils ShakeAlertLA with Mayor Eric Garcetti
VICA member AT&T and the City of Los Angeles unveiled ShakeAlertLA, an app designed to alert residents in Los Angeles County of an earthquake. The app sends notifications that an earthquake has occurred, potentially giving residents crucial moments of notice before shaking reaches them. Alerts will help residents take protective action by giving them notice to take cover and stopping public transit systems. After an earthquake, the app will help residents find emergency services and shelter.

Event Permits at Hangars
In response to the ban on public events in aircraft hangars at Van Nuys Airport and other airports in Los Angeles, VICA submitted a letter outlining our concerns and position in December.

Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety General Manager Frank Bush has responded to VICA's letter, and his response can be read here. The department is currently working on codifying the language in the temporary special event permit policy to clarify applicable building standards for a temporary event space.

Also, Councilmembers Nury Martinez and Joe Buscaino introduced a motion to address the issue on December 11, 2018. The motion can be read here.

VICA will continue to strongly advocate for a speedy resolution to this issue.
