VICA Voices Opposition to Minimum Wage Increases

VICA voiced opposition at Monday's Culver City's City Council meeting against a proposed ordinance that seeks to mandate a $25 minimum wage for certain healthcare employees in Culver City. The Culver City Council was taking a final vote on this ordinance at Monday's meeting.

The proposed measure would exclude 82% of healthcare workers in Culver City, including workers at community health clinics and facilities, nursing homes, and other caregiving centers.

Arbitrary and exclusionary measures like the proposed ordinance do not promote economic security; instead, they increase wages that could potentially lead to increased healthcare costs and jeopardize access to care. It is unknown how this policy would impact the broader community and what the cost of enforcement will be for the city.

VICA will continue to advocate for approaches to policies that seek to address existing inequities and disparities by advocating for the inclusion of the business community in the development process.

LAST CHANCE TO LET US KNOW - VICA's 2023 Legislative Priorities

Over the past few months, VICA gathered recommendations from our members on what they believe are the most important legislative priorities for 2023. After working to consolidate this list of recommendations, we are now turning back to our members to vote on their top ten priorities for the new year.

VICA members, you should have received VICA's 2023 Legislative Priorities survey (distributed through SurveyMonkey) in your email this week. If you are a member and did not receive the survey, or have any questions, please email Cathy at cathy@vica.com.

Bass Declares Homeless Emergency

Los Angeles is now under a state of emergency on homelessness. The City Council approved an order which allows Mayor Karen Bass to take an aggressive approach to housing the estimated 40,000 homeless on the city's streets. "It will allow her to cut through a lot of the red tape at City Hall, especially involving development and housing and the location of housing," said Raphael Sonenshein, executive director of the Pat Brown Institute at Cal State L.A. "It will allow her to coordinate all the departments, and she'll really be the true chief executive that in a crisis you need to have in a city like Los Angeles." In a statement, Bass said in part: "This is a monumental day for the city of Los Angeles, and I commend and thank the City Council for their swift action and unanimous ratification of my emergency declaration."

Renowned Soccer Journalist Dies

Grant Wahl died of an aortic aneurysm in when he was stricken while covering a World Cup match last weekend, according to an autopsy of the well-known American soccer writer. Wahl, who was 49, was stricken in the media tribune of Lusail Iconic Stadium in Qatar early Saturday during extra time in Argentina’s quarterfinal match against the Netherlands. Emergency workers immediately tended to him and treated him for 20 to 30 minutes before taking him away on a stretcher, reporters said. Wahl worked for Sports Illustrated from 1996 to 2021, known primarily for his coverage of soccer and college basketball. He then launched his own website, Fútbol with Grant Wahl, and a podcast with Meadowlark Media.

Success With Nuclear Fusion

In a first, U.S. scientists have created “net energy” through a nuclear fusion reaction, the Department of Energy announced Tuesday. The successful experiment, which took place Dec. 5 at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, is the most significant milestone yet reached in the decades-long quest to produce cheap, clean, carbon-free energy through nuclear fusion. “We have taken the first tentative steps toward a clean energy source that could revolutionize the world,” said Jill Hruby, administrator of the National Nuclear Security Administration.

Fed Raises Interest Rate by 0.5%

The Federal Reserve on Wednesday raised its benchmark interest rate to the highest level in 15 years, indicating the fight against inflation is not over despite some promising signs lately.

Keeping with expectations, the rate-setting Federal Open Market Committee voted to boost the overnight borrowing rate half a percentage point, taking it to a targeted range between 4.25% and 4.5%. The increase broke a string of four straight three-quarter point hikes, the most aggressive policy moves since the early 1980s. Along with the increase came an indication that officials expect to keep rates higher through next year, with no reductions until 2024. The expected "terminal rate," or point where officials expect to end the rate hikes, was put at 5.1%, according to the FOMC’s “dot plot” of individual members’ expectations.

France Advances to World Cup Final

France is heading back to the World Cup Final and aiming to do something that hasn't been done in 60 years - repeat as World Cup champions. France is making a return trip after defeating Morocco 2-0 in the semifinal. Morocco came into the match against France unbeaten in its last ten games (7 wins, 3 draws) and the first African country to advance to a World Cup semifinal. They were also just the third nation outside of Europe or South America to reach this deep into the tournament (USA 1930 & South Korea 2002). The final is Sunday with France taking on Argentina and their star Lionel Messi who is seeking his first World Cup title.

Famed Mountain Lion in Danger

The wildly famous big cat, P-22, was captured earlier this week by wildlife officials, who report his health has drastically declined. Biologists also believe the puma was struck by a car before he retreated to the backyard in Los Feliz where he was caught. In recent months, he’d been prowling unusually close to humans. Last month he killed a leashed Chihuahua — not his typical meal — and later attacked another dog. Officials with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife now say P-22 won’t be returning to his home territory. Biologists are carefully considering two options: relocation to a wildlife sanctuary or, if his health issues can’t be properly treated, euthanasia.
