Bass Declares Homeless Emergency
Los Angeles is now under a state of emergency on homelessness. The City Council approved an order which allows Mayor Karen Bass to take an aggressive approach to housing the estimated 40,000 homeless on the city's streets. "It will allow her to cut through a lot of the red tape at City Hall, especially involving development and housing and the location of housing," said Raphael Sonenshein, executive director of the Pat Brown Institute at Cal State L.A. "It will allow her to coordinate all the departments, and she'll really be the true chief executive that in a crisis you need to have in a city like Los Angeles." In a statement, Bass said in part: "This is a monumental day for the city of Los Angeles, and I commend and thank the City Council for their swift action and unanimous ratification of my emergency declaration."
Renowned Soccer Journalist Dies
Grant Wahl died of an aortic aneurysm in when he was stricken while covering a World Cup match last weekend, according to an autopsy of the well-known American soccer writer. Wahl, who was 49, was stricken in the media tribune of Lusail Iconic Stadium in Qatar early Saturday during extra time in Argentina’s quarterfinal match against the Netherlands. Emergency workers immediately tended to him and treated him for 20 to 30 minutes before taking him away on a stretcher, reporters said. Wahl worked for Sports Illustrated from 1996 to 2021, known primarily for his coverage of soccer and college basketball. He then launched his own website, Fútbol with Grant Wahl, and a podcast with Meadowlark Media.
Success With Nuclear Fusion
In a first, U.S. scientists have created “net energy” through a nuclear fusion reaction, the Department of Energy announced Tuesday. The successful experiment, which took place Dec. 5 at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, is the most significant milestone yet reached in the decades-long quest to produce cheap, clean, carbon-free energy through nuclear fusion. “We have taken the first tentative steps toward a clean energy source that could revolutionize the world,” said Jill Hruby, administrator of the National Nuclear Security Administration.
